surveyed 100 30 year old women about their weight to try find out what the average weight is for
30 year old women in my town, l would likely have one or two outliers. The outliers stand out in a
set of data, and they sometimes "skew" the data altering the mean and range of the data for sure,
but even though it may seem appealing, a true statistician would not just drop the outliers, unless
he was absolutely sure the data entered was an error, (committed during data entry or any other
step). For example if one of the recorded weights in my set of data with weights of one hundred 30
year women, was 19 lbs.... unless l interviewed someone with the most amazing form of dwarfism
in the world, more than likely the 19 lbs entry was a data entry error, she may have been 119 lbs or

help being reminded of the movie Good Will Hunting. There is a particular scene in the movie
where Matt Damon, playing a poor teen from Southern Boston confronts a wealthy MIT student.
Damon tells him, "You were born on third base and you think you hit a triple." In other words, we
often over–attribute our successes to our natural talents. But really, those talents and abilities came

cultural belief, tradition and attitude become part of the person and not just of his/her surroundings.
For example, Hofstedes dimension called "Power Distance Index" (PDI), is concerned with attitudes
towards authority and hierarchy. This cultural perception makes a huge difference in how people
feel with their superiors and how they react to control–authority, –father like figures. Its impressive
how something like a number–saying system can influence in the level of difficulty an Asian
student, compared to an American average student, can have in math. Asians have a built in
advantage when it comes to math. Does that mean they are more likely to succeed? Not
necessarily but it I an advantage rooted in a group's culture, in this case, Asians. Therefore cultural

This seemingly small advantage in most cases tends to give the older kids an advantage over the
younger players because they get more playing time, get placed on better teams, receive better
coaching, and in turn become more skilled hockey players. Obviously those who go on to succeed
must have innate talent, but that is not the primary factor deciding whether they succeed or fail at
the sport. The primary factor in how good they become at hockey is the better opportunities they

and Math Tests" Gladwell proves how people of Asian descent can focus more because it's in their
culture. Every 4 years a test is given to elementary and middle school students worldwide called the
TIMSS. The TIMSS test the students over math and science, but at the beginning the student has to
fill out a questionnaire that is 120 questions long. It turns out majority of students leave about 15 to
20 questions blank. Gladwell explains, "In other words, countries whose students are willing to
concentrate and sit still long enough and focus on answering every single question in an endless
questionnaire are the same countries whose students do the best job of solving math problems"

Gladwell believes that the Chinese are good at math for several reasons. In the beginning of the
chapter, Gladwell tells us that the Chinese are better at math than English speakers because their

When we look at outliers, when we look at success stories, if we look closely enough, we see lives
with opportunity from the start. To illustrate the importance of culture in success, Gladwell relates a
story of a Colombian pilot who most likely crashed a plane because, even with diminishing fuel, he
wasn't assertive enough to stand up to the intimidating control tower agents and demand to land.
Cultures that encourage passive submission to hierarchy, or who phrase their questions in subtle,
vague euphemisms, may find themselves at a disadvantage in some situations, such as the airplane
cockpit. Other times, your culture works for you. For example, Gladwell explains that Asians who
spent centuries working in rice paddies, a type of farming that requires meticulous care all year
long, passed on this work ethic to their posterity. Many of the inheritors of the rice–paddy culture

The author explains exactly what the professional asserts and how particular pieces of evidence
relate to Gladwell's unconventional idea of success. Furthermore, Gladwell's tone and style of
writing throughout Outliers contributes to his arguments' effectiveness. The manner in which
Gladwell tells the stories in relation to each individual claim is brilliant. Not only is the writing tone
of the author informative, thoughtful, and compelling, but it is also frequently conversational. Many
times in Outliers, Gladwell seems to be speaking directly to his readers. The author achieves this
conversational tone primarily by asking questions within his arguments. In The 10,000–Hour Rule
chapter, Gladwell applies this tone when he asks, "What's ten years?" The author is challenging the
reader to determine what significance ten years has in relation to success. Unknowingly challenged,
the reader searches for an explanation within his or her own thoughts before continuing reading.
The author answers his own question, "It [ten years] is roughly how long it takes to put in ten
thousand hours of hard practice" (41). Gladwell also uses a conversational style of writing by
including a personal touch within the epilogue, A Jamaican Story. "That is the story of my mother's

Outlier Essay: Martin Luther King Jr.
An outlier is a person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system. In other
words, an outlier is somebody who goes out of his or her way and does something extraordinary in
order to accomplish their goal. Martin Luther King Jr. is a true example of an outlier. In the early
1900s, segregation was strongly recognized in the United States, until Martin Luther King Jr. stood
up for what he believed in and made a change. Although he made a difference to the United States,
he was assassinated in the making of this process. This assassination is an example to why Martin

The law came seven months after Martin Luther King launched a Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) campaign created in Selma, Alabama, with the goal of forcing Congress to
pass this legislation. Not only did Martin Luther King Jr. accomplish the right of blacks to vote,
but he achieved the goal of less segregation in the United States. By leading the SCLC, he changed
the point of view of Congress towards voting and segregation. In order to do this, he had to go out
of his way to arrange meetings and conferences. The Outlier talks about the 10,000–hour rule, which
means that if you are determined to be successful, you need to have 10,000 hours of practice no
matter what it may be. The past events that included Martin Luther King Jr. add up to be at least
10,000 hours of "practice" or in his case, devotion, concerning the end of segregation and the start of
equality. These past events clearly meet the qualifications of Gladwell's definition to being an
outlier; Martin Luther King Jr. truly made a change in people's lives and made substantial history.
In addition to the previous events, the "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 took place. This was
located on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd estimated at 250,000 people. The King
