3. US MAHENDER
Hatti Kaapi
•It all began in 2009, in a 30 sq ft space
below the staircase of a building in Gandhi
Bazzar in Basavangudi, Bangalore “with an
initial investment of Rs.1 lakh”.
•Filter coffee at 25 outlets and employs
about 120 people
•Sells about 70,000 cups of conventional
filter coffee every day
•For our retail expansion, needed Rs.1.5
crore; Indian Overseas Bank has given us
30 per cent and the balance is through
internal accruals

4. NITHIN KAMATH
• Founder and CEO, Zerodha
• Zerodha, an online stock trading company,
has around 27,000 customers from Maharashtra,
NCR and Southern India, and handles an average of
Rs.5,000 crore every day,
or 1 per cent of the NSE’s average daily turnover.
• The model centres on using technology at the
back end to power business.
Zerodha does not have real estate expenses
and low employee overheads.
It has 100 employees
• “If you look at our business, we have done fairly well and expect to close this fiscal at Rs.40
crore with 50 per cent margins,” he says, adding that the downturn was a good time to start a
business.
5. Groom India

Groom India Salon and Spa Pvt Ltd.
The company’s chain of
salons was branded ‘Naturals’.
Naturals is now a 350-salon chain.
It has a presence in Sri Lanka and is
exploring more markets overseas.
There are 180 women entrepreneurs in the franchise,
which has generated over 6,500 jobs.
“We do make a lot of money.
But the focus is on creating women entrepreneurs,”
he says. In 2013-14, the Naturals brand generated
Rs.250 crore in revenue.
