2. Antimony is a metal which occurs naturally in the
earth’s crust. The product is sold commercially in the
form of grey, odorless pieces of metal in massive form
and occasionally in powder form.
3. Production data
• Principal identified world resources are in Australia,
Bolivia, China, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and
Tajikistan.
• China continued to be the leading global antimony
producer in 2019 and accounted for more than 60%
of global mine production
Commercial forms
of antimony are
generally ingots,
broken pieces,
granular or cast
cake.
5. Antimony Trioxide
• Antimony trioxide, also known as antimony oxide or Sb2O3, is the
most widely produced compound of elemental antimony.
• The nations that produce the most antimony trioxide are China,
South Africa, Bolivia, Russia, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
• Typical applications for antimony trioxide include flame retardant
synergist for use in plastics, rubber, paints, paper, textiles, and
electronics; polyethylene terephthalatepolymerization catalyst; a
clarifying agent forglass; an opacifier for porcelain and enamel;
6. Antimony trisulfide
•Antimony trisulfide (Sb 2 S 3) is found in nature
as the crystalline mineral stibnite and the
amorphous red mineral metastibnite.
•It is manufactured for use in safety matches,
military ammunition, explosives and fireworks.
•It also is used in the production of ruby-colored
glass and in plastics as a flame retardant.
7. Diantimony Tris (ethylene glycolate),
mainly used in the catalysis of
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin
Antimony Trichloride, mainly an
intermediate in the production of other
Antimony substances Diantimony
Pentoxide, mainly used as a synergist for
halogenated flame retardants

9. Computer applications
"Monatomic glassy antimony might be used as a new
type of single-element phase change memory. This is
the new finding from researchers at IBM Research-
Zurich and RWTH Aachen University who say that
their approach avoids the problem of local
compositional variations in conventional multi-
element PCMs. This problem becomes ever more
important as devices get smaller."
10. Support Organizations
The International Antimony Association or i2a
is the Brussels-based organization
representing the producers, importers and
users of multiple Antimony substances. i2a’s
aim is the sustainable and responsible
production, use and recycling of Antimony.
12. Antimony trichloride is an inorganic chloride salt
with formula SbCl3. It is used as a reagent for
detecting vitamin A and related carotenoids,
reacting with the carotenoid to form a blue
complex that can be measured by colorimetry
(the Carr-Price test). Solutions of antimony
trichloride were formerly used for dissolving and
removing horn stubs from calves and goats. It has
a role as a Lewis acid, an apoptosis inducer and a
colorimetric reagent. It is an antimony molecular
entity and an inorganic chloride. It derives from
a hydride of a stibane.
13. Diantimony
pentoxide
• Antimony pentoxide (molecular
formula: Sb2O5) is a chemical
compound of antimony and oxygen.
• Antimony pentoxide finds use as a
flame retardant in ABS and other
plastics and as a flocculant in the
production of titanium dioxide, and is
sometimes used in the production of
glass, paint and adhesives
14. Sodium Antimonate
Sodium Antimonate powder is used in the
Glass Industry as a fining agent or degasser,
especially in colour television bulbs and
optical glass.
Sodium Antimonate Hexahydrate is used
for the production of Colloidal Antimony
Pentaoxide used as a flame retardant. It is
also used for the production of extremely
high purity Antimony Metal and
subsequently high purity Antimony
Trioxide.
15. Antimony pentachloride
Antimony pentachloride is a chemical
compound with the formula SbCl 5. It is a
colourless oil, but typical samples are
yellowish due to impurities. Owing to its
tendency to hydrolyse to hydrochloric
acid, SbCl 5 is a highly corrosive
substance and must be stored in glass or
PTFE containers.
16. Sodium hexahydroxoantimonate
Sodium hexahydroxoantimonate
used for the manufacture of:
mineral products (e.g. plasters,
cement). Release to the
environment of this substance
can occur from industrial use:
manufacturing of the substance,
formulation in materials, in the
production of articles and as an
intermediate step in further
manufacturing of another
substance (use of intermediates).
17. Potassium
Hexahydroxoantimonate
American Elements produces to many
standard grades when applicable,
including Mil Spec (military grade); ACS,
Reagent and Technical Grade; Food,
Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade;
Optical Grade, USP and EP/BP (European
Pharmacopoeia/British Pharmacopoeia)
and follows applicable ASTM testing
standards.
