K-12 Mathematics Alignment Project
During the 2014-15 school year, we will be working with teachers to conduct a K-12 Mathematics Project. The small committees will be
studying Ohio’s New Learning Standards for mathematics to design instructional units and materials for all teachers. In addition, we will
improve the transition from grade 5 to grade 6 by developing an Advanced Fifth Grade math course at the elementary level. At this time,
we plan to continue the creation of iBooks by developing online mathematics resources for grades 6, 7, 8, and Algebra I during Summer
2015. Teachers have recently been invited to participate in the Project work through a survey.
Syntero, Inc.
We are thrilled to inform you that we will continue to collaborate with Syntero, Inc. (Dublin Counseling Center/Northwest Counseling
Services) to provide school based mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention services throughout the district. We have
received a grant from the ADAMH Board of Franklin County which will allow us to significantly expand services throughout the district.
Through this funding, Syntero will be able to provide a variety of services. Each school will be linked with a Syntero School-Based Clinician
to develop programming specific to the needs of each school. Prevention services are based on a 3-tier model:
Universal: Syntero can provide presentations for Professional Development (for school staff), Parent Workshops (open to community
members), and classroom presentations. Potential topics include: Hurting to Heal: Understanding Self-Injurious Behavior in Youth; Red
Flags: Depression Awareness; Suicide Prevention; Balancing Act: Promoting Mental Well-being of your middle school & high school
students; Don’t worry, I’m FINE (Parenting middle school students); Overscheduling; Helping Your Child Develop Coping Strategies to
Manage Stress & Anxiety; Bullying & Suicide; Building Resiliency, and Alcohol/Other Drug Prevention Strategies for Youth.
Selected: Syntero can provide screening/referral/linkage, risk reduction, and educational/skill building groups for students who had been
identified as “at-risk”. Syntero School-Based Clinicians are able to work with students individually to assist them with getting linked with
outpatient counseling. Multiple groups will be offered using evidenced-based curriculums including: COPE (Creating Opportunities for
Personal Empowerment), Social Skills, LEADER, AOD Education, Stress Management, Girls’ Empowerment, and Building Self-Esteem.
Indicated: While the funding is limited to providing prevention services for students who have been identified as needing more intensive
services, Syntero can provide case management and “risk reduction” services to link students/families with outpatient mental health
counseling. Services are able to be provided at the school or at either of their locations. For families who do not have health insurance,
Syntero offers a sliding fee scale. Syntero is able to provide mental health and alcohol/other drug (AOD) counseling services to children,
adolescents, and adults.

2014-15 Assessment Updates
Below is information you will need as you prepare for testing this upcoming year. Although this is a lot of information, we wanted you to
have all of this at the start of the school year:
1. The Assessment Calendars are up on the website. If these change, Susanne Lintz will send an updated calendar and make
sure the website is updated.
2. Districts were given the choice to administer the new assessments either using paper/pencil or online. We will be administering
all 6th grade assessments (ELA, Math and Social Studies) online and the 8th grade Science test online. All other testing will be
paper/pencil this year. This does not impact us until the Spring. Susanne will be giving more information as we get closer to this
testing.
3. Our testing website has been updated to include more information: you will have access to the test calendar, the assessment
purpose document, the Hilliard Assessment System visual, the Scholastic parent info sheet, and other resources. Please review
and refer parents if they have questions to: http://www.hilliardschools.org/departments/data-accountability/testing-faq/
4. Home Access will now display the Spring 2014 OAA scores, the Winter and Spring 2014 SRI/SMI scores, and the Fall 2014 and
the Winter 2015 SRI/SMI scores (as they become available).
5. We are planning to conduct Next Generation Assessment informational sessions at each high school for the Class of 2018
(current freshman) in the fall. Guidance counselors and principals will be involved in the development. More details coming
soon.

New Graduation Requirements
• Class of 2015 – 2017:
o Students in the classes of 2015 - 2017 and those who are repeating ninth grade this school year will continue to
operate under Ohio’s current graduation requirements.
• Class of 2018:
o The current Ohio Course Requirements remain unchanged
o All students take end-of-course exams in Algebra 1, Geometry, Physical Science, American History, American
Government, English 1, and English 2
ƒ Students can earn from 1-5 points for each exam, based on their performance
ƒ A cumulative passing on the seven end-of-course exams will be established by the State Board of Education
ƒ Any student who earned high school credit in any of the above courses before July 1, 2014, will automatically
receive a score of three points per course exam toward the total points needed for graduation
ƒ Middle school students this year who take one of these courses for high school credit must take the
corresponding state end-of-course exam this school year
o To earn a high school diploma, students must meet one of the following three criteria
ƒ Earn a cumulative passing score on seven end-of-course exams
ƒ Earn a “remediation-free” score on a nationally recognized college admission exam such as ACT or SAT.
(The State of Ohio will pay for all 11th-grade students in the Class of 2018 and beyond to take the exam free
of charge).
ƒ Earn a State Board of Education-approved, industry-recognized credential or a state-issued license for
practice in a career and achieve a score that demonstrates workforce readiness and employability on a job
skills assessment.

2014-15 OTES Information
¾ Formally Evaluated this Year with OTES:
• Rated Ineffective or Developing on the final summative rating during the 13-14 school year
• Certificated staff on a limited contract (1yr, 1yr, 3yr, 5yr)
• New to Hilliard
• Has no OTES rating from last year
• Individuals identified by administrators needing OTES support
• Volunteers
¾ Due to Board Policy, teachers rated ACCOMPLISHED will be evaluated every 2 years. They will not have the requirements of
an observation, conference or student growth measures rating. They will only need to complete a growth plan on the years they
are not being formally evaluated.
¾ Buildings need to have at least 50% of certificated staff formally evaluated this year. This 50% includes related services,
guidance etc. (even though they are not evaluated using OTES).
• If a building is over 50% and there are teachers that still want to volunteer to be evaluated, this has to be mutually agreed upon by
both the teacher and principal.
• If a building is not at 50%, then teachers will be encouraged to participate this year.
• If this plan is not successful, then the evaluation committee will reassess the process and recommend necessary changes.

¾ Teachers NOT being formally evaluated and who were rated:
• ACCOMPLISHED will need to:
o Complete a professional growth plan
• SKILLED will need to:
o Complete a professional growth plan
o Have one mutually agreed upon informal observation reflecting a standard from the rubric (only a date is needed to record in
eTPES) - this can include, but is not limited to walkthroughs*, data team meetings, IEP meetings etc.
o Have one conference to discuss observation
o Have a rating for Student Growth Measures (see SGM flow chart and chart for percentages) - this data will go into eTPES
¾ Tutors will NOT receive a Student Growth Measure Rating this year. If they are being formally evaluated, they will only use
the Teacher Performance side of OTES.
• This will impact linkage in the spring. Tutors will no longer link to students, but classroom teachers can still adjust their percentage to
reflect that they may not have provided 100% of the reading or math instruction.
¾ The SGM chart and flow chart have been updated to reflect changes in the growth measures this year.
*The intent of this observation is to provide feedback for professional growth. For this purpose, a 5-minute walkthrough is not appropriate.
2014-15 Scholastic Inventory Information
• We are still administering these but they will NOT count toward evaluations. The spring administration will be optional.
• All new students will need to be “Targeted” in SAM. See “How To Target SRI and SMI Levels” document for details. If you need
this document, let Susanne know.
• A Student’s username is still their ID# and their password will now be their ID# + the 3 letter abbreviation for their home building.
Below is an example of what students will use to login for testing:

• Teachers have been updated in SAM. Here is the information they need in order to login. They should change their
password after they login for the first time:
¾ Username: Network login (ex: frabottda) **all lowercase
¾ Password: Teacher1 (The first letter is capitalized. Last character is the number one.)
• Accommodations:
o For the Reading assessment (SRI), there will be no read aloud accommodations. The SRI measures independent
reading comprehension. The SRI has not been validated for students having the questions and reading passages read
to them.
o For the Math assessment (SMI), there will be read aloud accommodation provided if it is on the student’s IEP. SMI
items are written to assess math understanding and not reading and math vocabulary.
o English and Spanish read-alouds for text-based items are now available for SMI
• SRI has a Foundational Reading Assessment (FRA) for 2nd grade. If a student scores a 49 or higher on it, then they can
take the Reading Comprehension Assessment (which is the SRI and provides a Lexile)
• New Performance Bands- To align more closely to widely used college and career readiness standards, the SMI and SRI
performance levels have increased in rigor. THIS INFORMATION IS BASED ON END OF YEAR EXPECTATIONS:

Elementary Math Parent Website
In response to a November 2013 parent survey asking parents what type of information and help was needed with regards to elementary
math, Hilliard City Schools has created a parent website. The website is available on the district home page under the Parent Tab.
Parents asked questions about the curriculum being taught and why it was “different” from when they learned how to add, subtract, multiply
and divide. This website is meant to give parents some background on why different methods are taught at each grade level. It will also
show video examples of ways parents can work with students at home to help alleviate homework stress.
Empowering your student for the 21st-century workforce requires being able to do more than simply compute or carry out procedures.
Children need to understand what the numbers are as well as fact fluency. They need to know how, why and when to apply this knowledge
to answer questions and solve problems. They need to be able to reason mathematically and communicate their reasoning effectively to
others.
Elementary Teacher Website
In response to teacher need for examples of assessments and instructional resources, a group of talented elementary teachers worked
this summer to create a math website for Hilliard Teachers. This website is located on the Insider in the Curriculum Tab, under the
heading of Math within the Instructional tool tab. It is the first item labeled, “Elementary Math Framework Website.”
This website contains the beginning of the work that is being done to streamline math instruction in Hilliard. This website is designed to
help filter the enormous number of mathematics resources available to teachers both in print and online. The grade level buttons link to
each grade level’s Year at a Glance and units. Each standard on the Year at a Glance is linked to its own webpage where a collection of
lessons and assessments are housed. These lessons and assessments are not comprehensive and are not meant to be taught in order.
The Elementary Math Coaches will be requesting feedback from teachers throughout the school year in an effort to continually improve this
website!
21st Century Learning Center at Horizon
Hilliard City Schools obtained a 21st Century Learning Center Grant to fund an after school Learning Center at Horizon Elementary! This
grant is currently a three year grant affording our district $200,000 per year. The grant will allow our district to create a personalized
learning environment for students after school including physical activities, intervention support, enrichment opportunities, as well as
support to our families and community. Further, we will have the opportunity to invite specific targeted populations of students from other
elementary buildings as capacity within the center grows. We are extremely excited about the opportunity this provides our families!
Straight A Grant: In Consortium with Fairfield County ESC
HCSD joined a consortium of schools along with Fairfield County’s ESC to write a Straight A Grant. This grant is affording our district to
receive ST Math. This program was created by MIND Research Institute. ST Math is game-based instructional software for K-12 and is
designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning. Integrating with classroom instruction, ST Math
incorporates the latest research in learning and the brain and promotes mastery-based learning and mathematical understanding. The ST
Math software games use interactive, graphically-rich animations that visually represent mathematical concepts to improve conceptual
understanding and problem-solving skills.
Teaching and Learning Collaborative: K-2 Impact Grant
HCSD received a grant from Ohio Department of Education’s Mathematics Science Partnership. This grant is designed to Improve
Mathematical Practices and Classroom Teaching for K-2 Teachers. Buildings were selected based upon student demographics.
Currently, teachers from Britton Elementary and Horizon Elementary are involved in this grant. Participants from these 2 buildings will
receive 5 days of in-person PD and participate in iDiscovery online PD. During these Professional Development experiences, participants
will engage in an in-depth study of appropriate K-2 mathematics content on topics such as Counting & Cardinality, Operations & Algebraic
Thinking, and Number & Operations in Base Ten. In addition, participants will discuss learning progressions in mathematics, better
understand Ohio’s New Learning Standards for Mathematics, and develop a deeper understanding of assessment and how to use it to
guide instruction.

The Personal Success Network (PSN)
The artist formerly known as HOPE is full steam cranking this year at the ILC. We have a new system this year that is proving to provide
early success already. Our 80+ students are divided among our PSN Coaches. They set weekly and monthly goals, and carry these
goals at all times so that any ILC staff member can stop them and ask how their progress is going. To streamline the process we have
asked that anytime a referral happens that the high school counselor completes this Google form.

The NEXT Program – New eXperiences eXtra Time
We are currently awaiting feedback from the union leadership regarding details on the NEXT program. We understand you have teachers
and vendors that are chomping at the bit to get started with after-school enrichment opportunities. An important announcement regarding
outside vendors: If you have a PTO that hires outside vendors, and students are not paying, these types of enrichments are good to
continue. However, if you have outside vendors that charge students, we ask that you put a hold on these enrichments until the second
semester. In the meantime, if you have teachers that want to offer enrichments NOW, please have them contact Dawn Blankenship with
details. We will make the NEXT button LIVE on The Insider once we have approval from the union on compensation rates.
Senior Capstone
As you know, Senior Capstone is a HCSD graduation requirement for the class of 2015 and beyond. Capstone Coaches have been
meeting with seniors either individually, large pull outs, or in classrooms. The feedback we have received is that students are excited,
confused, and/or knocking it out of the park. If you have students or teachers with concerns or questions regarding the senior capstone,
please have them go see their Capstone Coach as the first line of defense. If it needs to go beyond that, Scott Morrison and Brent Wise
are here to meet with anyone. We would like to raise scholarship money for the top 6-district wide capstone TED talks. If you have any
suggestions on avenues for raising funds, please contact Brent Wise. Thank you!

New Addition
I would like to welcome and introduce our newest member of the PD Department, Terri Simon! Terri is our new secretary and she coming
to us from Beacon Elementary. Terri has already shown herself to be an amazing addition and team member! As we are growing and
learning, please do not hesitate to contact either one of us and ask questions, as this helps us learn how to best support you!
PD Implementation Team
- Please see the email I sent out on Friday, September 5th regarding a group to help work through the logistics and set up of the
November 4th Waiver Day. We are hopeful to get a good representation of administrators from each group: elementary, 6th
grade, middle school, and high school.
o The group focus is to work through the details of the plan
o Advise regarding logistical aspects
o Connect with staff who can teach specific sessions (TBD)
o Help disaggregate data post waiver day
o Assist again with the February waiver day
PD Needs Survey
- We will be contacting principals to set up times to visit or phone conference regarding the survey information. This visit can
range from 20-30 minutes up to an hour. However, I will adjust to your schedule and we can creatively find time that works for
you.
o Basic components of the meeting:
ƒ Review survey results
ƒ Discuss if the results are aligned to the building focus
ƒ Identify potential staff members who can be a support/instructor for the area of focus
HALS
- HALS groups will be coming soon. We are making sure that all procedural pieces are in place before setting up the class in
PDExpress. I have definitely considered the feedback from this summer’s meetings and hopefully we will have a format that will
more directly meet your needs.
