Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, many coaches believe that it is possible for
anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants do not run a marathon to
win. More important for most runners is their personal finish time and their placement within their
specific age group and gender. Another very important goal is to break certain time barriers. For example,
ambitious recreational first-timers often try to run the marathon under 4 hours; more competitive runners
will attempt to run under 3 hours. Many runners then prefer to finish for example in 3:29:59, which
makes them "sub-3:30h marathoners", instead of 3:30:01.
For most runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many coaches believe
that the most important element in marathon training is the long run. Recreational runners commonly try
to reach a maximum of about 20 miles in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles a week in total
when training for the marathon. More experienced marathoners may run a longer distance. During
marathon training, adequate recovery time is crucial. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended to take a
break for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results from not
getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in a lower
endurance and speed and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.

Like schools in Britain and other English speaking countries, those in the U.S. have also always
stressed “character” or “social skills” through extracurricular activities, including organized sports.
Because most schools start at around 8 o’clock every morning and classes often do not finish until 3 or 4
o’clock in the afternoon, such activities mean that many students do not return home until the early
evening. There is usually a very broad range of extracurricular activities available. Most schools, for
instance, publish their own student newspapers, and some have their own radio stations. Almost all have
student orchestras, bands, and choirs.
Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming-pools,
tennis courts, tracks, and stadiums - with the public. Often the students themselves organise and support
3
school activities and raise money through car washes, baby-sitting, or by mowing lawns. Parents and
local business often also help a group that, for example, has a chance to go to a state music competition,
to compete in some sports championship, or take a camping trip. Such activities not only give pupils a
chance to be together outside of normal classes, they also help develop a feeling of “school spirit” among

There is a custom in Italy for young people to get engaged on Valentine’s Day. Some shops sell
baskets and cups which are filled with sweets and tied with ribbons. The young lovers offer these to each
other as a sign of their love. In Korea, on February 14th, young women give sweets to their boyfriends,
and on March 14th their boyfriends buy them chocolate. However, the young people who do not have a
girlfriend or boyfriend can celebrate their own day on April 14th. On this special day, called “Black
Day”, these young people sit with their friends, who are in the same situation, and eat jajang noodles,
which are black. This ensures that everyone has a day to celebrate. Most people in the United States take
Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to express their feelings towards their loved one or to offer the hand of
friendship to others. However, it is popular on these days to send an “anti-Valentine” card. These cards

correct answer to each of the questions.

15
Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming-pools,
tennis courts, tracks, and stadiums - with the public. Often the students themselves organise and support
school activities and raise money through car washes, baby-sitting, or by mowing lawns. Parents and
local business often also help a group that, for example, has a chance to go to a state music competition,
to compete in some sports championship, or take a camping trip. Such activities not only give pupils a
chance to be together outside of normal classes, they also help develop a feeling of “school spirit” among
the students and in the community.

Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, many coaches believe that it is possible for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants do not run a marathon to win. More important for most runners is their personal finish time and their placement within their specific age group and gender. Another very important goal is to break certain time barriers. For example, ambitious recreational first-timers often try to run the marathon under 4 hours; more competitive runners will attempt to run under 3 hours. Many runners then prefer to finish for example in 3:29:59, which makes them "sub-3:30h marathoners", instead of 3:30:01. For most runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many coaches believe that the most important element in marathon training is the long run. Recreational runners commonly try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles a week in total when training for the marathon. More experienced marathoners may run a longer distance. During marathon training, adequate recovery time is crucial. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended to take a break for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results from not getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in a lower endurance and speed and place a runner at a greater risk of injury. 36. The word attempted in the passage means ____________. Like schools in Britain and other English speaking countries, those in the U.S. have also always stressed “character” or “social skills” through extracurricular activities, including organized sports. Because most schools start at around 8 o’clock every morning and classes often do not finish until 3 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon, such activities mean that many students do not return home until the early evening. There is usually a very broad range of extracurricular activities available. Most schools, for instance, publish their own student newspapers, and some have their own radio stations. Almost all have student orchestras, bands, and choirs. Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming-pools, tennis courts, tracks, and stadiums - with the public.
