When optimizing your website content on-page, there are many more important things than just keyword density and interlinking your pages. One of the most important things that we see so many people forget when optimizing their web pages, is tags - H1, H2, H3 tags. Tags help the search engines understand your content better, and they do help in rankings as well. Before Panda and Penguin updates, all you had to do is stuff your H1, H2 and H3 tags with your target keywords. Now you need to be smarter about it. How to add H1, H2, H3 tags the right way Most Important paragraph name should have an H1 tag. Which means - for the reader - that you see this sentence as more important, and for the search engines - that what you have in this tag, will have effect in determining your rankings. The most common use of H1, H2, H3 tags is just using them in the paragraph names - it is really the most "easy" way to use them too, because it is easy to add your keywords in the paragraph name as you do not need to think too much of it, just name the paragraph and make sure it has relevant keywords. About keywords in H1, H2, H3 tags This paragraph name above has an H2 tag. H2 is "less important" than H1, and H3 is "less important" than H3. How to add the keywords in H1, H2, H3 tags This paragraph name above is also an H2 - you can have more than one, but not too many. H1 should be just ONE. Now - the keywords that you should have in your H tags. You need to have a variety of relevant keywords - not just 2-3 keywords that you target, otherwise it might hurt your rankings. For a simple 500-800 word article, find 8-10 relevant keywords, and sprinkle them throughout the tags as well as the content. Do NOT over-optimize your content by repeating the same 2-3 keywords over and over again - trust me, it will not do any good to your site. In WordPress, you would add the H tags by selecting the sentence you need to add them to, and clicking on "Paragraph" button in the top left corner of the typing window. In an HTML file, you would go to the code, and would add <h1> BEFORE the sentence you want to tag, and "</h1>" AFTER the sentence you want to tag. H1, H2, H3 tags are important for on-page optimization, yet so many people simply ignore (or maybe miss) them.
