The author believes that teaching is like traveling in that it is a lifelong journey and passion. With a teaching degree, the author will be able to teach students across Canada and even overseas, just as traveling allows one to visit different places. Both teaching and traveling involve meeting diverse people and learning from students and travel companions along the way. While there may be challenges, the journey is worth it to help students grow and see their accomplishments, just as traveling is worth it to reach new destinations and learn new things.
3. My teaching degree, like a passport will open up a
world of possibilities. With my degree I will be able to
teach all grades of school. I will be able to teach all
across Alberta and Canada. This very powerful piece of
paper could even take me over seas to Hong Kong and
enable me to teach alongside my brother.
4. My students are like the people I meet along my travels. Each student has a
different background, culture and story to tell…..
I believe that as a teacher I will have to work with diverse students and this will
make the journey more inspiring.
5. As my travels broaden my horizons
and expand my knowledge so will my
students. They can teach me as much
as I can teach them…..
I believe teachers should never lose sight of their
vision to want to help students and I always want
to have a passion to go farther.
6. Travelling can haves bumps and hurdles along the way, as can
teaching. In travelling the delayed planes, immunizations,
and visas are classroom management issues, PAT’s and
changes in curriculum in teaching……..
I believe that like all people students and
teachers have all kinds of stresses in life and
school may only be one of these.
Despite these hurdles, the journey is all worth it when you reach your
destination and,….
7. I believe all students want praise and
approval of their accomplishments no matter
how small.
8. Luckily with my “back up plan” my journey won’t be
derailed for too long.
My back up plan will be trying different teaching
strategies. I will have an alternative landing like travelling.
Which will consist of having meetings with mentor
teachers, my teaching team and administrators….
I believe all students learn at different rates and have different ways of
thinking, it is my job to find the right plan for their needs.
9. My lesson and unit plans are like my travel
itinerary. It tells me what direction I am heading
in and what my time line is….
I believe good teaching requires great organization,
with good lesson and unit planning I will have
success and my “flight” will arrive on time.
10. The souvenirs I collect on my travels
will be proudly displayed on my
classroom walls. These souvenirs will
be of all the places I’ve visited and all
the things my travel companions( my
students) and I have learned about
and gathered along the way....
I believe all students possess good
qualities. Like in travelling you find special
gems along the way or moments I will
remember forever.
11. Finally, teaching I think is like travelling
in that it is not about the destination…
12. …it is about the journey! Teaching is a life long journey and one never stops
learning new things. Anyone that loves to travel knows that once you start you
can’t stop because you instantly fall in love! You want to travel for as long as you
can and absorb as many experiences, cultures and places along the way!
Students are the building blocks to the future,
they are what makes my journey. The students are
the reason I want to be a teacher. Just like
travelling you do it because you love it, I chose
teaching because I love working with children and
love seeing them grow along their own journey!!
