Friday the 13th - Textual Analysis ,[object Object],The first thing we see on Friday the 13th trailer is its production and distribution companies logos however they aren’t in their usual form because each one has been tinted red; this immediately points out that the film is a horror because the red has connotations of blood as well as danger. There is a full screen shot of water and then this leads to a shot of a lake; presumably this is Crystal Lake which is referenced on the poster, ‘Welcome to Crystal Lake’. It shows a forest in the next clip to set the scene that possibly victims would be trapped, a vehicle drives into the shot and it is speeding it shows that there is a group of teenagers in the car going to stay at a cabin. It shows them settling into the house and later them partying and drinking alcohol. We see a shot of a boy and girl who appear to be going to have sex which in some horrors is a usual convention as it leads to a killing. In the next scene it shows a boy and girl on the lake doing water-gliding; she falls off and as she is in the water she sees a figure of a man in the forest, this turns out to be Jason the films antagonist; he is seen holding a Machete (his weapon of choice) and wearing the hockey mask, the girl ends up crying as she realises she can’t go on land or she’ll be killed. It goes away from scenes and shows the producer name ‘Michael Bay’. Back to scenes we see a clutter of missing leaflets of a girl, we then see a boy who is possibly the missing girls’ brother, boyfriend or just friend. He is seen walking through the forest with a girl from the group of people pointed out earlier; it is nigh time and they have to use torches, this is typically how a kill is executed in a horror movie. There a several shots of the forest and then shows the boy talking to a woman who lives in cabin. In black and white we see a mouth of a girl who is screaming and crying, this scene leads into a shot of who the directors are, we see a different boy who is looking for something or someone at night; this shows a tent and inside it are a boy and a girl who appear to have been having sex but have stopped because they heard something; there is a shadow of a man walking past the tent to show that the killer is there. There is another boy and girl shown who look scared, this then leads to show a power outage of some house, we then get quick shots of some of the characters. We then see a shot of some feet walking in a fast paced motion; the feet are surrounded by rats and then we see the girl who was reported missing; so we now know she is maybe held prisoner; the girl is crying. We see a shot of an old wooden sign that says “Camp Crystal Lake”. There are shots of two characters, before we see a bed and when a torch is shone across the heard board we see that it says “Jason”. We then go back to the place that the missing girl is and Jason is walks into the screen, the girl is shaking and covers her mouth so she has probably broking free. We then see a different girl who has heard something and pulls back what appears to be a shower curtain; there is nothing there, she has an expression of relief however at that same moment Jason is shown standing behind her he is at least 6’5” tall, towering over the girl. We see a man bending down to have a look at some shadows that are being seen under a doorway but when he is on the floor Jason’s’ machete comes through the floorboards just missing the boy. We get a lot of quick shots that show the cast and on one of them shows Jasons’ machete coming through the floor again just missing the boy though in the next quick shot the boy is scene screaming so he might have been hit. We see a boy walking to a freezer that has a blood splatter on it when he opens it something falls on his head; It goes back to the girl in the tent who is backing into a corner but Jasons’ shadow appears behind her. We then see a shot of a police man and then a boy getting stabbed of Jason through the head. Over into the next scene Jason dumps a body on the floor in front of the boy looking for the girl and the girl who helped him look; they are hiding under a bed. We see Jason turn around in a quick motion and another cast member who is running from him. There is a dead body lying on top of a car that the boy who came looking for the girl is trying to get way in. Back to the water scene and the girl is screaming however the boy who was driving it goes over her head. There are more quick action shots primarily in the dark, Jason chucks on axe toward someone; the weather at this point is raining. Continuously we see Jason killing people, there is on extreme close up of an eye looking through something, more quick shots of the cast screaming, running and crying. The trailer ends with the number 13 in black before writing other text appears that says “Friday the 13th”, then the hockey mask of Jason with credits going over it. ,[object Object],The camera is underwater to start with before we get a long shot of the lake with the camera panning up. We get a long shot of a forest before we see a medium shot inside of a car. Long shot of the car driving out of shot, various quick shots of the cast. The camera pans up to show the Lake, long shot to establish where they are staying. Long bird’s eye view of the cast in the cabin this shows vulnerability and it looks as if someone is watching them. Over the shoulder shot of the girl who well in the lake; when she sees Jason, close up of her reaction and then a long shot of Jason before another close up of her. The camera pans around slowly to show the missing pictures of the girl. Long shot of the boy posting leaflets in peoples doors. Lots of quick shots to show they are in a forest at night. There is an extreme close up twice of a girl’s mouth who is screaming. Long shot with a quick zoom in of a tent; medium shot shows a boy and a girl and you Jason’s shadow in the background, many quick shots of the cast panicking. We see a medium shot of the back of Jason before getting a close up of his feet moving fast. There is a long shot of the sign Camp Crystal Lake, and there is a long shot of the headboard which says Jason; which then goes to a close up. We see a close up of Jason walking past the camera it is a quick shot however we see that he is carrying a machete. A close up shot of the girl who is covering up her mouth, a medium shot when another girl pulls back a shower curtain and Jason is standing behind her. Close ups when the machete comes through the floor also the pace of the shots has quickened. Quick close up of when Jason stabs a man through the eye, close up of a girl who is hiding covering her mouth. There is a shot where the camera is low so Jason looks dominant, there is a handheld camera shot when a girl is running from Jason. A long shot to show when the boat goes over the girls head. Medium shot of Jason walking through a tunnel, at this point in the trailer the shots are very fast paced. Medium low shot shots when Jason is on the camera to once again see that he is the powerful one. Hand held when someone else is running, still the shots are very fast. The camera goes from a close up view of the eye hole in the mask and slowly zooms out to show it is a mask before the credit come on. ,[object Object],The first effects used on the trailer is on the distribution and production companies the logos of New Line Cinema and Paramount have been coloured red which has the theme to what sort of genre the film is. Between the first shot and second shot it is a fade in and again with the third scene another fade in for the establishing shot, one more fade in before there is a white fade. More fade in’s and another white fade, black fades of the water scene, a shot of the producers name on a title card. More black fades, in black and white to show the girl screaming, another title card which shows the same maker of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre on it. White flashes when the name is shown on the headboard after each one it gets closer to it. More black fades before there is w white screen the number 1 on it and then the next bit of scene before a white screen again this time with the number 2 on it; this continues all the way up until number 13 which then fades to red and at the same time ‘Friday the’ appears, which is the name of the movie, that then fades away for the mask and credits to come on. ,[object Object],The first thing you hear when the production and distribution company names come up is a very low sound in major key, this is non-diegetic. Over the lake scenes we hear a woman’s voice saying, “Did you know a young boy drowned here? He was my son…and today is his birthday”. Then the sound of the car drives into the scene which stops the low tune; instead we hear diegetic sound from a car radio and laughing off the people in the car. Continuous dialogue and then non-diegetic music over the trailer; it is happy music; you can still hear the dialogue. When the girl has fell off the boat the music stops however there is non-diegetic sounds in a major key when Jason is seen; there is still dialogue and the diegetic sounds that the cast are making. We hear the missing girl scream; diegetic and at that exact moment there is a loud non-diegetic sound. A woman’s voice can be heard saying, “people gone missing around here their gone for good” this is diegetic sound. Heavy breathing can be heard; it is diegetic sound. A non-diegetic sound of a heartbeat can be heard when there are shot of the people starting to panic; there are still non-diegetic major bangs heard. Dialogue can still be heard and a boy saying this place is called “camp crystal lake” The non-diegetic music stops quickly when the girl who is missing covers her mouth as she is hiding from Jason. People can be heard screaming (diegetic) Jason’s actual horror music can be heard, in low major key (non-diegetic) As the quick shots progress there is a non-diegetic sound of a siren; the music gets faster as the trailer is getting closer to end and the numbers are getting closer to 13, when 13 appears all sounds stop and all you hear again is Jason’s horror music, then overlapping that music is his mother’s voice again, “his name was Jason and today is his birthday”
