8. The princess in love leyend
It was the 13th century and
Cáceres was under Arab rule,
dominated by a haughty and
arrogant Kaid. Christians
besieged the city, unable to
break in. But it happened that
a Captain of the army of King
Alfonso IX fell in love with the
only daughter of the Kaid, the
most beautiful princess he
had ever seen. She revealed to
him to a secret passage to get
through the walls and enter
the fortress: the passage of
Mansaborá.
9. Many nights the captain crossed this passage to see his
princess, but his honor was stronger than his love for
her. So finally one night he betrayed her and led the
Christian army through the secret passage, making
possible the reconquest of the city.
When the Kaid discovered how his enemies had
entered, he punished his daughter transforming her
into a hen and condemned her to wander the streets
of the old town of Cáceres until the city shall be back
under Arab rule.
It is said that you can only see the “princess in love”
in the magical night of San Juan on 24th June.
