5. Old town.
The Old Town has preserved its medieval structure and much
of the buildings of the Protestant Reformation. One end is
closed by the castle and the main artery, small streets called
closes or wynds routed downhill on both sides of Main Street
as a crossroads. You can find places of great importance, such
as the Cathedral of Saint Giles and the courts. Other notable
places of interest are the Royal Museum of Scotland, Surgeons'
Hall, Edinburgh University.
6. New town.
The New Town was the solution to the overpopulation
of the Old Town in the eighteenth century. The city
had become too compact, limited to the tail of the rock
that served as a natural defense. In 1766 a
competition was held to design the New Town, which
was won by James Craig, an architect of 22 years.
The plan was created a rigid orthogonal plane, which
was consistent with the ideas of rationalism of the Age
of Enlightenment. The main street was to be George
Street, which follows the natural line from north of Old
Town.
