LUNDI 14 OCTOBRE 2013
idyllique. La ville illuminée flotte
comme un bateau de l’amour sur
l’océan d’une nuit tiède. Mes amis de
Pologne admirent la gentillesse des
gens autour d’eux. Ils observent le car-
actère arménien authentique des édi-
fices et même ceux des magasins mod-
ernes. Un magasin d’alcools en partic-
ulier suscite leur intérêt – l’Arche de
Noé sur la rue Amirian. Alors que nous
y entrons, l’hôte accueille les visiteurs.
Les spiritueux distillés en Arménie et
dans le monde s’étalent dans leurs
bouteilles élégantes. Noé lui-même n’a
sans doute jamais imaginé son arche
flottant sur un immense océan de
lumière et d’opulence.
Les lumières de Place de la
République, de l’Opéra et de la
Cascade nous rappelle la ville italienne
de la Renaissance, Vicence, avec une
descendance moderne grâce à l’archi-
tecte italien Andrea Palladio, et le
monument d’Alexandre Tamanian,
disait : « Aujourd’hui Antranik serait

Harout Chitilian sera candidat
pour Bordeaux-Cartierville
Montréal 27 septembre
2013 - Déjà une semaine est
écoulée depuis le début de la
campagne électorale municipa-
le et les candidats, motivés par
le défi de surmonter les adversi-
tés des prochaines semaines,
affichent leurs couleurs. Harout

Premier ministre Jawaharlal Nehru
d’Inde et du président Gamal Abdel
Nasser d’Egypte.
boom économique a commencé. Si

Another season of the AGBU Summer Internship Program has come to an
end. This year, a combined 64 interns from countries as diverse as Canada,
France, Lebanon, Russia, Armenia and Turkey participated in the program.
From June to August, they worked alongside industry leaders. In each office,
with the help of their supervisors, they developed new skills and networked
with potential employers.
Glowing reviews of this year’s interns came from all of the program’s supervi-
sors both in New York and Yerevan. As each of the YSIP interns reported, living
in Yerevan and touring the country reinforced their sense of identity as they cre-
ated lasting memories.
On an excursion to Nagorno-Karabakh, they also saw the great progress the
region is making, and during the annual supervisor’s reception, they had the
chance to speak directly with the United States Ambassador to Armenia, John A.
Heffern, about Armenia’s relations with Karabakh.
These activities allowed the diasporan students to better understand
Armenia’s rich history and bright future, leaving each certain that they would
one day return. In addition to offering professional development opportunities,
the AGBU Summer Internship Program places a strong focus on community ser-
vice.
The AGBU Summer Internship Program was founded in New York in 1987
and quickly established itself as a premier program for international Armenian
students. Its success prompted an expansion to Yerevan in 2007 and Moscow in
2010. In 2003, AGBU also began operating a parallel program in France, which
serves students from the French University of Armenia throughout the school
year. To date, the program has connected hundreds of diasporan peers who
have risen to the tops of their fields.
Applications are now being accepted for NYSIP 2014, and the deadline is
November 1, 2013. To learn more, please visit www.agbu-internship.org or
email nysip@agbu.org.
Aliyev lays claim to Yerevan,
praises Safarov
BAKU — Azeri President Ilham Aliyev praised axe-murderer Ramil Safarov
as a hero and vowed to “reclaim” Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity by claiming
that one day every Azeri can live in Yerevan, Zangezur and other areas that are
part of Armenia.
In a speech, that seemed more like a rant, Aliyev, who was attending the
opening of a so-called genocide museum, said: “Azerbaijan’s state flag will wave
in Shusha, Khankendi [Stepanakert] and Azerbaijanis will live on their historical
lands in the future. Our historical lands are Irevan [Yerevan] and Zangazur
regions.” The museum is dedicated to the victims of a 1918 “massacre,” which
Aliyev claims was committed by Armenians against Azeris. The fact that a coun-
try of Azerbaijan did not exist until 1918 seems to escape the Azeri leader.
On another note, Aliyev blamed what he called “Armenian fascism” on the
international community’s reaction to crowning Safarov a hero.
“I was condemned baselessly and so many foreign dishonest politicians made
accusations against me, because the Azerbaijani officer, Ramil Safarov, returned
[to his] homeland and I gave him freedom,” said Aliyev.
The Azeri leader went on to stress that all factors, including economic and
military ones, indicate that in a matter of time Azerbaijan “will restore its territo-
rial integrity” and reclaim its “historic lands,” which includes the capital of
Armenia, Yerevan.
Armenia’s leader thanked his
French counterpart for a warm recep-
tion. He said it was a great pleasure to
visit the friendly country of France
again.
President Serzh Sargsyan noted
that, stemming from close historical
ties, Armenian-French relations have
been steadily developing over the past
twenty years to reach the highest level
in history. Armenian-French friend-
ship is so deep and comprehensive
that it can hardly be described in a few
sentences, Armenia’s leader said.
The two nations have reached this
level due to a high-level political dia-
logue, including the Armenian and
French presidents’ mutual visits, close
parliamentary cooperation, cultural,
education and scientific ties, as well as
regular contacts between executives.
The Armenian president pointed out
an excellent tradition of maintaining
this high-level dialogue over recent
years – at least one presidential meet-
ing a year to discuss Armenian-
French, as well as Armenia-EU, coop-
eration, urgent regional and global
problems.
At their meeting on Tuesday, the
Armenian and French leaders dwelt on
the issues as well.
With respect to trade and economic
relations, President Serzh Sargsyan
commended the presence of numer-
ous French businesses in Armenia,
particularly the presence of such lead-
ing companies as Carrefour, Pernod
Ricard, Orange, Crédit Agricole,
Alcatel, Veolia, which will encourage
others to launch their activities in
Armenia.
Armenia’s leader highlighted the
assistance programs the French
Development Agency has launched
this year. He stressed successful devel-
opment of decentralized cooperation,
particularly close friendly contacts
between over 30 local government
bodies of Armenia and France. On his
part, President François Hollande
stressed the importance of the 3rd
conference on decentralized coopera-
tion to be held in Valence, France,
October 15-17.
With respect to parliamentary ties,
the Armenian and French presidents
welcomed active work of parliamen-
tary friendship groups. It is one year
since Armenia has been a full member
of the Organisation internationale de
la Francophonie (OIF), and Armenian-
French educational and cultural ties
are successfully developing.
President Serzh Sargsyan also thanked
his French counterpart for France’s
consistent efforts at a peaceful settle-
ment of the Nagorno-Karabakh con-
flict. The Armenian and French lead-
ers reiterated that they do not see an
alternative to a peaceful settlement of
the problem within the OSCE Minsk
Group co-chairmanship. Armenia’s
president noted that Armenia attaches
special importance to the French pres-
ident’s personal involvement in the
process.
The sides also thoroughly discussed
the prospects of Armenia-EU coopera-
tion. They were unanimous on the
necessity for all-out efforts to maintain
the quality of cooperation and contin-
ue reforms. In this context, President
Serzh Sargsyan re-affirmed Armenia’s
commitment. President François
Hollande assured his Armenian coun-
terpart that France, as Armenia’s
friend and one of the EU leading mem-
ber-states and a major global actor,
will go on assisting Armenia in its
progress toward Europe.
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
once more expressed gratitude for
France’s significant contribution to
the international recognition of the
Armenian Genocide.
To ensure further high-level dia-
logue between the two friendly
nations, President Serzh Sargsyan con-
firmed the invitation to pay a state
visit to Armenia extended to French
President François Hollande.

A Triumphant Canadian Tour Versace explores production of
high-fashion dresses in Karabakh?
STEPANAKERT — Italian business leaders met with Artsakh Prime
Minister Ara Harutunian Wednesday in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic to dis-
cuss the possibility of launching manufacturing units for such high-fashion com-
panies as Versace, Armani, Prada and Moschino.
With the government of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic planning to develop
light industry in the country with a project to resuscitate the soviet-era silk man-
ufacturing, the talks with the Italian business leaders aim to provide the best
possible climate for such investment.
The textile production, carpet manufacturing, wool processing and thread
production plants are already working. The program will not only contribute to
Artsakh’s economic development, but will also create local jobs.
According to Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Deputy Prime Minister Arthur
Aghabekyan, in line with a preliminary agreement, the Italian company will
cover the expenses of import of equipment and export of production.
“We’re here to familiarize ourselves with the conditions. I think we’ll succeed
to launch production in the country in cooperation with your authorities. We’ll
mostly produce sportswear,” an Italian businessman said.
This initiative has angered Baku. The Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan has
launched an investigation and “relevant instructions” have been given to the
Azerbaijani Embassy to Italy. Some Azeris are urging a boycott of the Italian
brands. The Versace representative in Baku said, Versace is an Italian company
which can choose to open representations in any country of the world. “I see
nothing that would contradict Azerbaijani interests”, he said.
By Araxie Altounian, PhD Musicology
Faithful to its mission to promote Armenian artists and the Fine Arts, the
Canadian Armenian Association for the Performing Arts (CAAPA) hosted a
series of concerts featuring three young professional musicians, Miho Saegusa
(violin), Karen Ouzounian (cello) and Tanya Gabrielian (piano). All three young
women have completed their postgraduate studies at the very prestigious
Julliard School of Music in New York, where they reside, and lead very active
lives as performing musicians.
Their Canadian tour took them to the Armenian Embassy in Ottawa (June 5)
followed by Montreal (St Gregory Armenian Cathedral, on June 6) downtown
Toronto (at the Heliconian Hall, on June 7) and finally at the Holy Trinity
Armenian Church in Scarborough (on June 9). The program consisted of classi-
cal works that had roots in folklore, and opened with three short works by the
Armenian composer Aram Khatchaturian (1903-1978) for violin and piano,
Nuneh’s Variation from the ballet Gayane, Song-Poem, and Saber Dance, also
from the ballet Gayane. Next came the music of the Czech composer Leos
Janácek (1854-1928), Pohádka (Fairy Tale) for cello and piano, and that of
Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967), Duo for Violin and Cello, Op.
7. The second part of the concert was dedicated to a major work by another
prominent Czech composer, Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904), namely his Piano
Trio in F minor, Op. 65.
The choice of the music was refreshing and colorful. Classical music derived
from folklore, especially that of Eastern Europe and Armenia, is intense, rhyth-
mic and highly expressive. The three performers took turns to introduce the var-
ious selections which helped the audience gain an insight into the background
of this original music. But what created the great enthusiasm among the listen-
ers was the engaging performance of the three young musicians: a solid tech-
nique, beautiful tone, intense expressivity, and a genuine dedication to the
music they played.
In response to the fervent applause they received, the performers concluded
the evening with an exquisite version of Father Komitas' Akh, Maral Jan¸
arranged for violin, cello and piano by the American composer, Lembit Beecher.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for future success to
the three talented musicians, with the hope of hearing them again in the near
future. Our special thanks and congratulations also go to CAAPA for offering us
the opportunity to enjoy such an inspiring musical concert.
WASHINGTON — Using direct
language, the U.S. Department of State
has sharply criticized Baku for a sur-
prise move blocking a U.S. observer
mission from visiting Azerbaijan to
review electoral preparations being
made for its October 9th presidential
election.
According to RFE/RL, a spokesper-
son for the U.S. Embassy in Baku said
the pre-election visit, which was to
have been led by Deputy Assistant
Secretary of State Thomas Melia, was
abruptly cancelled at the request of
the Azerbaijani government. No rea-
son was given.
In a sign that the State Department
may be edging away from its flawed
practice of artificial even-handedness
in public statements about Armenia
and Azerbaijan, U.S. diplomats have
begun specifically “laundry-listing”
Baku’s many democratic shortcomings
and corruption-based problems.
Responding to an inquiry by H1
Television Washington correspondent
Haykaram Nahapetyan, the State
Department issued the following state-
ment, addressing many of these issues
directly.
The State Department’s response is
offered in full below:
“The U.S. regrets that the govern-
ment of Azerbaijan has objected to the
composition of a U.S. delegation that
was to make an official pre-election
visit to Azerbaijan. As a result, the visit
will not take place.”
“The Azerbaijani government’s
actions raise questions about the envi-
ronment leading up to the October 9
presidential election.”
“We call on the government of
Azerbaijan to ensure a free and fair
electoral process that reflects the will
of the people.”
“We urge Azerbaijani authorities to
respect the freedoms of assembly,
association, and speech as well as the
rule of law and due process before,
during, and after the presidential con-
test. We also urge the authorities to
facilitate the important work of
domestic as well as international elec-
tion monitors.”

Diamond production develops
in Armenia
During the months of January-
August 2013 the volumes of the pro-
duction of diamonds in the Republic
of Armenia have increased by 49,2% in
comparison with the same period of
the previous year and made 58,927
carats.
The gold production volume has
increased by 7,8% and reached 759,1
kilograms. According to the data pro-
vided by the National Statistical
Service of the Republic of Armenia,
during the first six months of 2013
138,800 carats of diamonds have been
exported from Armenia, the more than
a half of which (78,200 carats) goes to
Belgium, as reported by Armenpress.
In 2008 the financial and economic
crisis had a serious impact on the dia-
mond production in Armenia. Though
in 2011 the field not only came out
from the crisis but even increased its
export volumes.

EBU are investigating claims that jury got bribes to vote for a certain
contestant, The Independent writes. The sources claim Azerbaijan
offered bribes to get high scores.
