 An experienced groundskeeper and stable

horses throughout his career. In his role as
groundskeeper at Knobby Hill Farm in Millis,
Massachusetts, Theodore Rufo oversaw the
care of two horses as well as three llamas and
all farm facilities.

3. About Horse Care
 As a general rule, horses benefit from efficient
body systems that keep them cool even in the
face of intense physical exertion. But when the
heat gets too high, their bodies may become
overwhelmed. For this reason, owners and
riders should carefully monitor their horses for
signs of heat stroke, such as an elevated
respiratory and heart rate that does not slow
down as it should when the horse rests.
Extreme lethargy, excessive sweating, or a
lack of sweating may also indicate heat stroke,
which can be fatal.

4. Conclusion
 To avoid this condition, choose a cooler time of
day to ride, such as the early morning or late
evening. Ride in the shade whenever possible
and be sure the horse has access to cool water. In
addition, help the horse replace electrolytes by
adding supplements to its water or feed. Always
hose the horse with cool water after riding, paying
special attention to the neck and inner thigh,
where the largest blood vessels live. When turning
the horse out, be sure that he or she has access
to shade, and when inside, use fans to keep air
moving in the barn.
