- Before you start planning for technology, conduct a technology assessment to determine the current state of technology in your organization. Are your software/hardware current? Do you have secure backup for your organizations files if you computer is stolen or crashes? Do you have access information for your website, mail server etc stored in a safe place? Do you know what programs you staff is using in the organization? By conducting an inventory of what you have will give you some insight into what needs to be done in the short term.
- Strategic technology planning means using technology more effectively, so that it 'disappears' into the background just like all of the other tools and infrastructure that voluntary sector organizations strategically use to support their mission.Good technology planning and decision-making are based on the same kind of strategic planning principles already used by the sector for everything from program development to running a campaign.Proper planning shows that organizational leadership understands that technology projects exist to support the strategic and programmatic goals of an organization – and that the people who do strategic and program work need to drive the technology plan.
- Improve service to clients by making it easier from staff in all program areas to work together on client cases. Upgrade organizational database systems so that they can be used as an integrated case management system across all program areas.Increase number of past clients that stay connected to the organization as donors or volunteers. Create monthly e-newsletter that informs past clients of happenings and volunteer opportunities in our organization.
- Prevent information overload by mapping out clear processes and streamline how information is categorized, processed and disseminated
- Based on your strengths and challenges, list projects or areas you could work on. For each area, consider:how will this project help you meet your organization goals?how much it might cost (high level estimate)what are the other work and costs you will have to make this happen - e.g. training, data migration, new infrastructure, market research on donors how you can use your strengths to assist younext steps to move forward on this project
