The Multiplication Pack
1. Multiplication is a quick way
of adding groups of things.
Each group must have the
same number of things in it.
Here are four groups of oranges.
There are three oranges in each group.
There are twelve oranges altogether,
so four groups of three is twelve.

2. We use multiplication in many different situations.
Here are some examples.
You might see these
words and phrases in
multiplication questions:
multiply
times
lots of
groups of
multiplied by
array
repeated addition
product
Working out the total cost when you
are buying lots of the same item.
Finding the area
of a space.
Paying people for the number
of hours they have worked.
Working out how long
a task might take.
3. We use the x sign when we are multiplying.
This means times, multiplied by,
lots of or groups of.
Here are two groups of tennis balls.
There are four balls in each group. So...
This means...
• Two times four equals eight.
• Two multiplied by four equals eight.
• Two lots of four is eight.
• Two groups of four equals eight.

The answer
is called the
product.
4. To multiply a
number by four,
double it twice.
15 x 4
Double 15 = 30
Double 30 = 60
To multiply a number by 50, multiply
it by 100 and then halve it.
To multiply a number by 25, multiply
it by 100 and then halve it twice!
To multiply a
number by 9,
multiply it by
10 and subtract
the number.
19 x 9
19 x 10 = 190
190 – 19 = 171
