1. Area and perimeter are different
ways of measuring a shape.
The area is the amount of space
inside the shape.
The perimeter is the distance
around the edge.
2. This field is a rectangle.
It is 4 metres long and 3 metres wide. We can find out the
area of a rectangle
by multiplying the
length by the width.
4 x 3 = 12
4m
3m
So the area
of the field is
12 square metres.
We can write this as 12m2.
These measurements
are called the shapeâs
dimensions.
This means
âsquaredâ.
3. Some shapes are
made by joining
two or more shapes
together. These are
called compound
(or composite)
shapes.
6m
4m
3m
5m
3m
9m
To find the perimeter, add the
lengths of ALL of the sides.
Make sure that you donât miss any!
6 + 5 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 9 = 30m
To find the area, split the compound shape into smaller
shapes. Work out the area of each part and then find the total.
6 x 5 = 30m2
3 x 4
= 12m2
4m
3m
5m
6m
The area of this compound shape is:
30 + 12 = 42m2.
