This document discusses Castelo de Penela & Germanelo, two medieval castles in Mondego, Portugal. It notes that references to Castelo de Penela date back to the 11th century and that under orders from D. Sesnando within 100 years, further defenses had to be built due to its increasing importance. It also mentions that Castelo de Germanelo was built in 1142 as an addition to help defend the region of Penela. Today, not much remains of Castelo de Germanelo which can only be accessed on foot through muddy grounds.
