The Traditional Media or Legacy
Media are traditional means of
communication and expression
that have existed since before the
advent of the new medium of the
Internet. Industries that are
generally considered part of the
old media and broadcast are
cable television, radio, movie and
music studios, newspapers,
magazines, books and most print
publications.
3. What is “new media”?
New media is a broad term in media studies that emerged in the latter part
of the 20th century. New media is different from traditional media in how is
uses new technologies to allow more and different people from all over the
world to create and respond to media in ways that were not possible before.
In general, “new media” is a term used to describe types of news and
information that have been created in the past 15 years on the internet.
It is inherent in the name New media that New Media will one day become
part of Old Media.
4. Blogging
A blog (a blend of the term web log) is a
type of website or part of a website
supposed to be updated with new content
from time to time. Blogs are usually
maintained by an individual with regular
entries of commentary, descriptions of
events, or other material such as graphics
or video. Entries are commonly displayed in
reverse-chronological order. Blog can also
be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or
add content to a blog. In the West, blogs
have come to challenge other traditional
forms of journalism such as newspapers
and television.
5. Interactivity
One way that blogs differ from
traditional media alternatives such as
newspapers is in how the audience can
interact with the authors of each post.
When a reader has an opinion about
something written on a web log, they
can often leave a comment about what
they thought of the story. If the author
of a post reads this comment, they can
respond to it on the same blog, giving
both the creator of the content, and
the audience a voice, and a deeper
understanding of the issues involved.
6. User Video
Video hosting sites such as YouTube
and Youku allow anonymous users
from all over the world to post their
own original videos on the web. By
doing this, users can bypass
traditional distribution channels and
show their work to the whole world.
These types of sites have already
allowed average everyday people to
become celebrities by posting
videos of themselves.
7. Globalization
Globalization refers to the increasingly
global relationships of culture, people and
economic activity. Most often, it refers to
economics: the global distribution of the
production of goods and services, through
reduction of barriers to international
trade such as tariffs, export fees, and
import quotas. Globalization
accompanied and allegedly contributed to
economic growth in developed and
developing countries through increased
specialization and the principle of
comparative advantage. The term can also
refer to the transnational circulation of
ideas, languages, and popular culture.
8. Podcasting
A podcast (or non-streamed
webcast) is a series of digital media
files (usually audio) that are released
episodically and often downloaded
through web syndication. The word
replaced webcast in common use
with the success of the iPod and its
role in the rising popularity and
innovation of web feeds.
Most podcasts are used to record
monologs or conversations between
people much like those found on
many older radio talk shows.

10. Augmented Reality
Augmented reality (AR) is a
live, direct or indirect, view
of a physical, real-world
environment whose
elements are augmented by
computer-generated sensory
input such as sound, video,
graphics or GPS data.
By using augmented reality,
users can post their own
comments or advice about
places and businesses that
the user is near.
11. Collaboration
Collaboration is working together to
achieve a goal. It is a group process where
two or more people or organizations work
together to realize shared goals, (this is
more than the intersection of common
goals seen in co-operative ventures, but a
deep, collective, determination to reach
an identical objective) — for example, an
intriguing project that is creative in nature
—by sharing knowledge, learning and
building consensus.
12. Ebooks
An electronic book (or e-book, ebook, digital
book) is a book-length publication in digital
form, consisting of text, images, or both, and
produced on, published through, and
readable on computers or other electronic
devices. Sometimes the equivalent of a
conventional printed book, e-books can also
be born digital. The Oxford Dictionary of
English defines the e-book as "an electronic
version of a printed book," but e-books can
and do exist without any printed equivalent.
E-books are usually read on dedicated e-book
readers. Personal computers and some mobile
phones can also be used to read e-books.
13. Social Media
Social media is web-based and mobile
technologies used to turn communication into
interactive dialogue. Andreas Kaplan and Michael
Haenlein define social media as "a group of
Internet-based applications that build on the
ideological and technological foundations of Web
2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of
user-generated content."
14. Democratization
The democratization of knowledge is the
acquisition and spread of knowledge
amongst the common people, not just
privileged elites such as academics.
With the rise of the internet,
professionals are no longer needed for
the bare purpose of the mass
distribution of information and the
shaping of opinion In terms of
democratization of
knowledge, Wikipedia has played a major
role. For instance, Wikipedia has
attracted 400 million viewers across the
globe and has communicated with them
in over 270 languages.
15. Online Advertising
One way that creators of new media are
able to make money from their efforts is
through online advertising. The internet
has become an ongoing emerging source
that tends to expand more and more. The
growth of this particular media attracts the
attention of advertisers as a more
productive source to bring in consumers. A
clear advantage consumers have with
online advertisement is the control they
have over the item, choosing whether to
check it out or not.
In its most common use, the term "online
advertising" comprises all sorts of banner,
e-mail, in-game, and keyword advertising,
on platforms such as Google, Facebook or
Twitter, has received increased relevance.
