A clause is a group of words that
contains a subject and a verb. It
may be the whole sentence or
just part of the sentence.

4. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE

An independent clause is a clause that has 1
SUBJECT and 1 VERB. It is also known as a simple
sentence because it expressed a complete thought.
Example: The bird flew away.
Example: I caught the ball.
Example: She studied for her hard test.

5. DEPENDENT CLAUSE
Me
A dependent clause is a clause that has 1 SUBJECT
and 1 VERB. It DOES NOT express a complete
thought.
Example: While I was asleep
Example: After the game ended
Example: Since she went to the store

6. DEPENDENT CLAUSE

A dependent clause will always begin with a
subordinating conjunction.

7. ADVERBIAL CLAUSE

An adverbial clause is a subordinate clause
(noun/verb, but doesn’t make sense on its own) that
modifies a verb, an adjective or an adverb.

8. ADVERBIAL CLAUSE EXAMPLES
Me
I never go swimming unless I have a buddy go with me. (The
subordinate clause modifies the verb “go.” Therefore, it is an adverbial
clause.)
Will you lend me that book when you have finished reading it?
The dog looks silly when it chases its tail.

9. NOUN CLAUSE

A noun clause is a subordinate clause that acts as a
noun. Noun clauses begin with words such as how,
that, what, whatever, when, where, whether, which,
whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, and
why. Noun clauses can act as subjects, direct
objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives, or
objects of a preposition.

10. NOUN CLAUSE EXAMPLES
Me
Whoever thought of that idea is a genius!
On weekends, we can do whatever we want. (This noun clause is acting
as the direct object of the sentence.)
Whichever restaurant you pick is fine with me.
My greatest asset is that I am a hard worker.

11. RELATIVE CLAUSE
MeA relative clause will begin with who, whom, that
which, whose, where, when. They are used to give
extra information about something without adding
an extra sentence.

12. RELATIVE CLAUSE EXAMPLES
Me
The winner, who was twenty-five, will receive one thousand dollars.
(Who is the subject, was is the verb. The clause is giving extra
information about the winner, but it is not a complete thought on its
own.)
Do you see the cat which is lying on the roof?
I don’t like the table that stands in the kitchen.
