Proactivity contributes to the humanization
of the prison system by focussing on
reintegration of inmates in society through
implementation of educational activities such
as reading, creative writing and debates on
culture, traditions, identity and lifestyles.

Correctional Facility with an average of 25
male inmates participating in workshops and
other sessions.

The inmates drew a basket full of healthy food items with the
symbol of Slow Food – a snail in the middle.

In the second phase, a real basket was made of
cane in crossed form symbolising the grills of a
prison. The inmates made artefacts referring to the
Mediterrean diet of wood and plaster: fish, meat,
vegetables, fruit, milk, yoghurt, olive oil, cereals
and bread. The food items were placed on quarter
plates made of clay.
All these objects were painted in colourful shades.

2. Research on traditional recipes from some
regions of Portugal, Cape Verde and Angola
taking us back to the cultural roots of most
inmates.
Inmates contacted family members to obtain
recipes from their respective cultures and some
others were taken from magazines or shared
amongst themselves.
They write, draw and paint the recipes.

3. Weekly food tasting:
Food tasting sessions are conducted every
alternate week with regional cookies, sliced
cheese from the Azores and homemade local
bread.
There is debate on the flavours and taste of food
with invitees who are called to participate.

4. Slow Food Workshop:
We had 22 participating inmates, 3 prison school
teachers and 3 penitenciary staff to whom we
disseminated the concept of slow food.
The workshop was about spices and eating
habits.
We read a text from the book “A Senhora das
Especiarias” and discussed unfamiliar words
relating to spices and foods from the Indian
Culture.

4. Slow Food Workshop:
Inmates were asked to find an adequate title for
the text out of which everyone voted on
“Sabores e Dissabores de uma Vida do Oriente”

5. Cottage and Goat Cheese tasting workshop:
26 Inmates, 2 prison staff, 4 Confiar staff
members and 2 teachers participated in this
workshop where a local producer shared her
knowledge on the production of cheese. The
producer undertakes the whole process of
milking, manufacture and sale of cheese. All
present had the opportunity to savour the
different types of cheese served on local bread.
