Digital revolution is upon us. Cloud has become increasingly mature, social has taken over our lives by storm, whether twitter, Facebook, linkedin or just about doing anything with our personal or private lives. Mobile / smartphone is almost literally wearable tech in our pockets but more is coming. And finally with big data & analytics (structured and unstructured), we are at the brink of defining our new lives as "fully informed consumers". IoT (Internet of things) is the next big platform, a marketplace where all things will happen. Yes, all of the things!
This presentation was given in Malaysia conference 2009 and it still holds true!
2. What the heck is a Cloud?
• Wikipedia says: “Cloud computing is Internet-based ("cloud")
development and use of computer technology ("computing"). The cloud is a metaphor for the
Internet (based on how it is depicted in computer network diagrams) and is an abstraction for
the complex infrastructure it conceals.[1] It is a style of computing in which IT-related
capabilities are provided “as a service”,[2] allowing users to access technology-enabled
services from the Internet ("in the cloud")[3] without knowledge of, expertise with, or control
over the technology infrastructure that supports them.[4] According to the IEEE Computer
Society, "It is a paradigm in which information is permanently stored in servers on the
Internet and cached temporarily on clients that include desktops, entertainment centers, table
computers, notebooks, wall computers, handhelds, etc."[5]!
!
• Cloud computing is a general concept that incorporates software as a service (SaaS), Web 2.0
and other recent, well-known technology trends, in which the common theme is reliance on
the Internet for satisfying the computing needs of the users. For example, Google Apps
provides common business applications online that are accessed from a web browser, while
the software and data are stored on the servers.
7. ...Or some figures?
• Merrill Lynch said $160 Bn (CC)!
• IDC said $42Bn by 2012 (CC) - After
MSFT Azure I saw $60 Bn!
• Gartner said $3.4 Trillion (overal IT)!
• How to relate numbers to real figures in
this Real-Time Global Economy?*
8. Cloud Computing: The
Technology Bailout Plan?
• What would John Maynard Keynes
say?!
• What would Milton Friedman & Anna
Jacobsen Shwartz say?!
• What would Kondratieff say?!
• What would you say?
9. Why will it last longer?
• World Economy is not about to get
healthier soon enough - Deleveraging
to hit other core businesses - Carry
Trade/Carry Risk!!
• We need to listen to Kondratieff!
• Markets will have to adapt pragmatic &
conservative approach
11. Tech Delevereging of Toxic
Products?
• Oversubscribed shelfware; Cloudware
could be consumed “on-demand”!
• Big software houses ramp-up may not
help!
• Stallman and Ellison are both right and
wrong!
• Virtualization solved your hardware asset
oversubscription; CC will address your
14. Trick Question
• Can you tell me how much it cost NYT
to convert their 150+ years of scanned
archives into PDFs
15. The 4th North Imperative
• When does my data cross borders?!
• What are those borders and what
happens to it?!
• Should I even care? -- Younger
generation may not have any problems
with it unless...!
• Examples of 1-0-1 checkpointing
16. Protection from ourselves
• iRobot: Will you comply?!
• Lesser human intervention the better!
• More control on core businesses!
• More focus on rapidly developing
information warfare; no time for
managing people/software/licensing/
oversubscription
18. Self-Sourcing Model
• Visualization!
• Multi-dimensional data manipulation!
• Predict and play doomsday/happy
days game - a la Ben Affleck in
Paycheck!
• Demystify all those complex domains!
• Ahhh wait...lets play do a demo on my
Cube Manager 1.0
