transport and pipette liquids. By equipping a pipettor with optical sensors, its
operating scope can be expanded. For example, it can be used as a colony picking
system.

A colony picking system finds healthy colonies of cells on a petri dish and picks them
(see Fig. 2). It is used by biologists to clone large numbers of colonies. Such systems
played a key role in the Human Genome Project, and still play in genetics research,
where millions of colonies are needed to decode genes.

2. Previously, the image processing algorithms to robustly detect colonies were
developed by students. The next step is to port these algorithms in our C++
framework and to realize the interface to the robot.
Tasks:
âą Implementation of our tested algorithms in C++
âą Validation of the ported algorithms
âą Conceptual design of the sensor â robot interface and development
âą Validation of the whole system
Figure 2: a) original picture b) detection results c) classified objects
Prerequisites:
âą Basic (or better) programming skills C/C++
âą Knowledge of Matlab/Octave
âą Helpful courses or equivalent knowledge (not compulsory):
o Information and Communication Theory, Signal Processing
o Automation and Control Technology
o Robotics Seminar
