Few years ago my father, who was CVD patient, passed away due to heart attack. He was only 61. Same thing happened with my mom in law. She was just 57. Then recently some distant relatives were affected by CVD/CAD. Many people are aware of this disease but I feel that they just live with it. Some do take precautions to avoid but may be it is not enough. I decided to learn more about this and learn how one can take precautions. This is a vast subject hence the presentation I put together is just a beginning of scratching the surface. Lot of information is available on the right websites and books. I refer to one such book.
2. Little bit about your HEART
● Beating since our first breath
● Pumps blood through 60,000
miles of arteries and veins
● Heart muscle needs high energy
● Heart muscle is most important
muscle in our body
3. Why act on Heart Health NOW?
● About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.1
● Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart
disease in 2009 were in men.1
● Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing nearly 380,000 people annually.1
● Every year about 720,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 515,000 are a first heart attack and 205,000
happen in people who have already had a heart attack.2
● Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year.3 This total includes the cost of
health care services, medications, and lost productivity.
Die of CVD or Live Healthy?
4. Dirty Dozen Risk Factors
1. Too much insulin
2. Toxic Blood
a. Homocysteine
b. Lipoprotein
c. C-Reactive Protein
d. Fibrinogen
e. Ferritin
3. Oxidative Stress
4. Poor Bioenergetics
5. The Bacterial Threat
a. Gum Disease
b. Nanobacteria
1. Toxic Metals
2. Emotional Stress
3. Gender Factors
4. Trans-fatty Acids
5. HIgh Blood Pressure
6. Genetics
7. Radiation
5. High Insulin and Blood Sugar
Insulin is enzyme produced by pancreas to get glucose and
triglycerides into cells for energy production
→ High blood sugar leads to high insulin generation
→ High insulin does not work effectively
→ Thus glucose and triglycerides cannot enter cells
and keep circulating in the blood
Side effects
Thicker-sticker blood, raised CRP level, increased clotting tendency, free
radical damage to cells, protein glycation, blood vessel spasm/constriction,
carbs stored as fats
6. Homocysteine
Homocysteine = Amino Acid
→ plays role in oxidation of Cholesterol
→ leads to arterial plaque
→ common cause of CAD
7. Lipoprotein(a)
Perform basic repair duties in arterial walls
→ During inflammation and Vit. C deficiency,
Lp(a) works more and influences plaque
generation
9. Fish Oil
1. Omega 3 fatty acids
a. EPA and DHA compounds
2. Slows the rate at which Plaque advances and protects against plaque
rupture
3. Decreases Lp(a), Triglycerides, and BP
4. Increases HDL
5. Reduced arterial wall inflammation
6. Improves endothelial function
7. Makes blood less sticker and less likely to form clots
8. Contributes to bioenergy of the heart muscle
9. Omega 3 from flax seed oil have short shelf life and is prone to oxidation
10. Vitamin C
1. Retards progression of atherosclerosis
2. reverses endothelial dysfunction
3. improves recovery following heart attack
4. helps control BP
5. Keeps CRP in check
6. Helps neutralize Lp(a) and vascular wall damage due to homocysteine
7. Gets lead out of our system
8. Promotes conversion of excess cholesterol into bile acids for fat digestion
11. Magnesium
1. Serves in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in body, including generation
of cellular energy and muscle relaxation; synthesis of fat, protein, and
nucleic acids; maintenance of strong bones
2. Endothelial cell friendly. Stabilizes plaque
3. Improves metabolic efficiency of heart muscle cells
4. Why magnesium deficiency
a. People don’t eat vegetables, nuts regularly
b. food processing results in vital mineral loss
c. Colas contain phosphates, which inactivates magnesium
d. Stress depletes body of magnesium
12. B Vitamins
1. B-3 (Niacin) raises HDL and reduces LDL
2. Homocysteine problem stems from deficiency of three B-complex - B-6,
Folic acid, and B-12
3. Improves endothelial function
4. The B-vitamins participate in the most important aspects of food
metabolism, the production of energy and immune function
13. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
● Mitochondrion need
Coenzyme Q10 to produce energy
needed by the cells to perform
their actions
● Our body is designed to produce
Coenzyme Q 10 but with age this
production decreases
14. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
1. There is widespread deficiency of CoQ10 among CVD patients.
2. It is most powerful anti-oxidant known. It protects mitochondria
3. More than 4000 scientific studies and 12 international conferences have
distinguished CoQ10 as a healing superstar and lifesaver. It does all these
a. Generates energy, strength, and vitality, even for older people
b. reduces mild to moderate hypertension
c. fortifies the immune system against illness, including cancer
d. improves nervous system and brain disorders
e. protects against gum disease
f. slows down aging process
g. It can re energize and rejuvenate heart cells
16. Choose Heart Healthy Diet & Lifestyle
1. Control your portion size
2. Eat more vegetables and fruits
3. Select whole grain
4. Limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol
5. Choose low fat protein sources
6. Reduce sodium in your food
8. Plan ahead: Create daily menus
9. Allow yourself occasional treat
