By 2015 the world will need an additional ten million classrooms. At the same time, millions of existing classrooms are in serious need of repair and refurbishment and will need to be upgraded. Open Architecture Challenge Focus:  Students and teachers understand best what makes a learning space work. The  2009 Open Architecture Challenge  will invite them to partner with architects in their community to design better, greener classrooms for their schools.
Open Architecture Challenge Focus:  You can partner with a school in your community, a local solution to a local issue. Engage the students and teachers to design an innovative modular or traditional site-built structure. OR You can partner with one of the schools that our school building partners work with, in India or Uganda.

Your design should address the unique challenges your school faces in trying to provide innovative, safe and sustainable learning spaces.

Design Curriculum In partnership with our education partners Curriki and the Global Nomads Group we have designed a companion curriculum hosted on Curriki to help designers engage students and teachers to help them understand their built environment better.  To further engage the students, Global Nomads Group is hosting webcasts for the eight lesson plans.

In India, the average teacher-to-pupil ratio is 40:1 and  schools in high-density urban areas in low-income communities across India are faced with growing demand for enrollment. School building partners Modular Building Institute, Blazer Industries Open Architecture Challenge School districts have many constraints when planning for new classroom space. They must respond to shifting populations and overcrowded schools, aging infrastructure, limited capital funding and ever shrinking budgets. Relocatable classrooms are often chosen by administrators as an expedient solution to many of these complex issues.

School building partner  Building Tomorrow In Uganda, 57 percent of children finish primary school and 18 percent have the chance to attend secondary school. And over 1 million children are not enrolled in primary school and, of those, 70 percent are never expected to.

Open Architecture Challenge Focus:  If your design wins, your school will receive funding up to $50,000 to build or upgrade a classroom, and you will receive a $5,000 grant to help them do it. To enter the challenge log on to www.openarchitecturechallenge.org

They must respond to shifting populations and overcrowded schools, aging infrastructure, limited capital funding and ever shrinking budgets.
