Minneapolis, Minnesota is located on the Mississippi River and is known as the "City of Lakes" due to the many lakes within the city. It was founded in 1819 at Saint Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River, which provided water power for mills. The city grew around flour milling and sawmills, and later became a center for banking and industry. Today, Minneapolis has professional sports teams and remains an economic center, while also focusing on its riverfront and parks.

4. The origin and growth of Minneapolis was spurred
by the proximity of Fort Snelling, the first major
United States military presence in the area, and by
its location on Saint Anthony Falls, which provided
power for sawmills and flour mills.
Fort Snelling was established in 1819, at
the confluence of the Mississippi and
Minnesota Rivers, and soldiers began
using the falls for waterpower. When land
became available for settlement, two
towns were founded on either side of the
falls: Saint Anthony, on the east side, and
Minneapolis, on the west side.
5. The two towns later join into one city in
1872. Early development focused on
sawmills, but flour mills eventually became
the dominant industry. This industrial
development feed the development of
railroads and banks, as well as the
foundation of the Minneapolis Grain
Exchange. Through innovations in milling
techniques, Minneapolis became a world-
leading center of flour production, earning
the name "Mill City". As the city grew, the
culture developed through its churches, arts
institutions, the University of Minnesota and Although the sawmills and
a famous park system. the flour mills are long gone,
Minneapolis remains a
regional center in banking
and industry. The city has
rediscovered the riverfront,
which now hosts parkland,
the Mill City Museum and the
Guthrie Theater.
6. Professional sports are well-
established in Minneapolis. It
has got a basketball team
“The Minneapolis Lakers”, the
city's first in the major leagues
in any sport, won six
basketball championships in
three leagues to become
the NBA's first dynasty before
moving to Los Angeles.
7. The Minnesota Vikings and
the Minnesota Twins arrived in the
state in 1961. The downtown
Metrodome, opened in 1982, is the
largest sports stadium in Minnesota,
with one major tenant, the Vikings.
The Metrodome is the only stadium
in the country to have hosted a Major
League Baseball All-Star Game,
theSuper Bowl, the World Series,
and the NCAA Basketball Men's
Final Four.

of the Metrodome or near the
Farmers Market on the westside
of downtown.

Mary near Loring Park was named by Pope
Pius XI in 1926. The Billy Graham
Evangelistic Association and World Wide
Pictures film and television distribution
were headquartered in Minneapolis. Today,
Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in
Minneapolis has more than 13,000 active
members and is the world's largest Lutheran
congregation.
