 SLAVERY
 BY:TABREE BELLO
OVER-VIEW
Black slavery in the united states began in the colony of Jamestown in the year 1619, and was
officially established in 1654.

SLAVERY soon became a profitable business for colonists in the seventeenth century.

Slaves were captured or bought in Africa and imported to the “new world” to work on tobacco,
cotton, and various other types of plantations as free laborers.

Many slave mothers committed infanticide in order to prevent their children form being born
into slavery.

Slave owners often stole slaves from each other.

SLAVERY was abolished by Lincoln with the Emancipation proclamation of 1863.

The cotton gin is a machine that helps to separate cotton fibers from the cotton seed. It was
invented in March of 1794 by Eli Whitney.

The invention of the cotton gin fueled slavery even though it was beginning to die out.

Through the use of the cotton gin plantation owners could process a more significant amount
of cotton than they normally could, in an efficient manner. This in-turn led to more cotton
farms being created and thus more slaves were needed on plantations in order keep up with the
high demand for cotton in the united states.

After this machine was created cotton became Americas leading crop.

Free Blacks

Free blacks in america were considered a third race .

African american people as individuals were frowned down upon by
American citizens.

People in the north hated free blacks more than people in the south.
Slaves
Slave life was always brutal, slaves were purposely kept illiterate .

laws that protected slaves were rarely ever enforced.

Most slaves were raised in two parent house holds.

Because African slaves were forced into christianity their own religions and customs were often mixed with christian
beliefs and customs.

Africans unlike their whites avoided marrying their first cousins.

Slaves often sang songs of hope or despair and were at the will of their masters.

Because the price of slaves was so high smugglers had to smuggle slaves into the south , even though slaves were not
imported to the United States after 1808, and they knew that their actions were punishable by death.
The american colonization society was formed in 1817 in order to help transport africans back
to africa, although some who had been here long enough were reluctant to go back. Led to anti
slavery protests.

The Missouri compromise of 1820 admitted missouri into the Union as the twenty-first state. It
prohibited slavery in the former louisiana territory and missouri.

Abolition movement - Intended to kill slavery and the international slave trade. Most
abolitionist leaders hailed from New England. Abolitionists held anti slavery protests.
