This document discusses future trends in communication technology based on several communication theories. It predicts that by 2025, Google Glass or similar wearable technology will be widely used due to its hands-free, voice-activated features. By that time, people will likely carry multiple internet-connected devices and have high media dependency. While some theories say new media won't replace old forms, the document argues technologies like radio and newspapers may become obsolete as internet and advances replace their functions.
2. The Beginning
• Around 2010-2011 is when people really started to get in
to their cell phones because of all the cool new features
that were available
3. • It seemed like the more features they added to the phone
the more people came dependent on it, making them
want even more out of their cell phone. But soon I see the
future of the cell phone ending up like the pager, and
becoming obsolete.
4. Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations
• Diffusions of innovations is a theory that explains how,
why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread
through cultures. This theory helped me pick my first
piece of technology that will be widely used in 2025
because of how rapidly it is becoming popular.
5. Google Glass
• Google Glass is a type of wearable technology with an
optical head-mounted display (OHMD). It was developed
by Google with the mission of producing a mass-market
ubiquitous computer. Google Glass displays information in
a smartphone-like hands-free format. Wearers
communicate with the Internet via natural language voice
commands
6. • The reason I feel like this technology will be wide spread
in the next ten years is because of the fact that its hands
free and voice activated. Also just for the simple fact of its
innovation. There has never been anything like this
before. People are always looking for that new thing, and I
believe this is it.
7. Uses and gratification theory
• Uses and gratifications theory (UGT) is an approach to
understanding why and how people actively seek out
specific media to satisfy specific needs. UGT is an
audience-centered approach to understanding mass
communication. Diverging from other media effect
theories that question "what does media do to people?",
UGT focuses on "what do people do with media?
8. • That theory led me to think about all the different types of
gadgets people will have on them at one time by the year
2025. I can see a lot of people having more than one
device that is capable of all the things a phone can do.
Even now there is already glasses, watches, and regular
phones.
9. Media Dependency Theory
• The basic dependency hypothesis states that the more a
person depends on media to meet needs, the more
important media will be in a person's life, and therefore
the more effects media will have on a person.
10. • This theory is already a factor in todays world.
People have become more and more dependent
on the media for all types of things. By the year
2025, I expect media dependency to be much
worse with the way technology is advancing.
11. The Principle of Relative Constancy
• This states that the internet won’t kill TV or radio
or newspapers; it will just sort of say “Move over;
I’m going to eat a part of the existing advertising
dollar pie PLUS we’re going to share the same
viewers.”
12. • I do not totally agree with this theory. It may not be by
2025 but I believe at some point things like the radio and
newspaper will be “killed” off by the internet and whatever
other new technology that comes along by then.
