2. Sempra’s Finances:
Better than any time in their history
It‟s their most profitable
year in history – $1.1Bil in
the first 9 months alone
Their „thank you‟:
No Pay Raise in 2011 and less than
the cost of living in other years
3. Sempra’s Finances:
Better than any time in their history
CEO Debra Reeds retirement:
$35 MILLION & FREE MEDICAL
YOUR RETIREMENT PACKAGE: undermined
with a two-tier system, no promise for
the future, it discriminates against
women and you bear the cost of
medical inflation!
4. Sempra’s Finances:
Better than any time in their history
They also want to:
Make catastrophic sick time impossible to
access
Make it unsafe to ever do work for the union
Tell us who can be a union representative
and communicate with you
They also want to make the public less safe
by working you to exhaustion and continuing
to reduce the level service
5. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
You actions, Sticker & Picket
Days, Rallies and Executive
Home Visits have produced
movement and finally got the
attention of Company
executives. We will continue
to escalate as necessary.
6. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
The JSC will make decisions
regarding any work actions and
the duration of those actions
based on what “is” or “isn‟t”
happening at the Bargaining
Table on a day by day basis. We
will telegraph as little notice as
possible to the Company
7. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
We Expect everyone
to Strike: Full-time,
Part-Time,
Probationary,
Temporary…
NO EXCEPTIONS!
8. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
We will communicate
thru our picket captains
with each work location
the actual day or days
when we will strike
9. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
In the run up to the strike,
we will have a system-
wide picket at every single
base and work location at
the start of shift
10. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
On Strike Day 1:
Picket your work location
then
Everyone head downtown!
Car pools-Buses-Trains
whatever it takes
11. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
On Strike Day 2&…:
Picket your work
location
12. Everyone Strikes
No Exceptions
Under the NLRB our Strike is a protected
concerted action we expect everyone
to participate in our action for a fair
contract – we will fight and file unfair
labor practices if anyone is harassed
or penalized in anyway. We are fighting
for a better contract and benefits for
everyone so we expect everyone to
participate!
13. What the Joint Steering
Committee has Decided
We must assume that the
Company will cut off the dues
as they have done in the past.
We are setting up a process
for dues collection. We have
done it before and we can do
it again.
14. Why don‟t we just continue
to bargain?
1. Talking is getting us nowhere. Bargaining 101
is that the Company is not scared of the
bargaining committee however good they are
unless they are thoroughly scared of the
membership.
2. The Company is wasting time on proposals that
may be illegal. They are desperately trying to
get us past the winter months
3. Members all over the system are saying we
voted to strike - why has calling a strike taken
so long.
15. Picket Captains, Shop Stewards
and Activists: Our Duties
Communication- Keep our Members informed.
Leaflet your work location, make sure all members
have the information you have
Take the time to talk to younger union members –
this fight is about their future. Why should they
participate?
Recruit more activists (The more the better)
Indentify Part-Timers who will help. There are Part
Timer Workers, NOT Part time union members.
16. Picket Captains, Shop Stewards
and Activists: Our Duties
What materials do you need to organize your work
location – Demand you get it
Be ready to organize a day of action or “Picket
Day” that we will use to notify our members of
pending work action and how long. This Day may
coincide with developments in Bargaining
Begin to sign up members for dues collections –
The company will stop dues deductions to weaken
our ability to fight back for a good contract
17. Picket Captains, Shop Stewards
and Activists: Our Duties
Picket Captains, Leads, Shop Stewards & activists will be
asked to evaluate their work locations of supporters
and non supporters. We must keep everyone
accountable for exact numbers
Picket Captains will be given Do’s & Don’ts – We will
create forms that help you recruit & schedule members
for picket duty. Picket Captains & alternates will be in
charge of Picket lines
When a strike day(s) or an action is called by the JSC,
Picket Captains will be informed in advance of logistics
and instructions to give members at all work locations
18. Picket Captains, Shop Stewards
and Activists: Our Duties
Under the NLRA a Strike or Work action is
protected & concerted activity.
We expect EVERYONE to participate in any actions
or a strike.
Picket Captains, Shop Stewards and Activists must
document what was said by supervisors and
indentify witnesses. We will take all measures
necessary to challenge unlawful activity by
management
19. Picket Captains, Shop Stewards
and Activists: Our Duties
Finally, everyone must treat a “picket line” as
serious business. A picket line is your new
“Work Location” in a fight to defend our
Contract for our Families. We will be in the
public view and must conduct ourselves
accordingly.
What Else?
