General Terms
Breed â a stock of animals within a species having a distinctive appearance and typically having been
developed by deliberate selection
Breeding animal- an animal caused to produce offspring typically in a controlled and organized way
Dam â a female parent
Flock â a grouping of a species of livestock (sheep, poultry)
Herd â a group of a single species of animal (cattle, horses, swine, goats)
Livestock â domestic farm animals kept for productive purposes (meat, milk, work, wool)
Market animal â livestock bred and raised for food consumption
Polled â a naturally hornless animal
Sire â a male parent
Litter â multiple offspring produced at one birth by a multi-parous mammal. Also called brood.
Chickens
Chick â a newly hatched or a very young chicken
Broilers â a chicken that is six to 13 weeks of age used for meat production
Pullet â a young domestic hen, usually one that is less than one year old
Hen â an adult female chicken
Cockerel â an adult male chicken
Rooster â all domestic chickens

Cattle
Bovine â the scientific name for cattle
Calf â a sexually immature young bovine
Heifer â a young female bovine which has not yet had a calf
Cow â a mature female bovine
Steer â a castrated male bovine
Bull â a sexually mature male bovine

Goats
Caprine â refers to animals in the goat family
Kid â a young goat
Wether â a castrated male goat
Doe â (aka. nanny) a female goat
Buck â (aka. billy) a sexually mature male goat

*Goats are the number one producer of milk in the world.
** Goat meat has many different names that depend on the goatâs geographic location and age of animal.
Pigs
Swine â a refers to animals in the pig family
Barrow â a young, castrated male swine
Boar â a sexually mature male swine
Gilt â a young female pig
Hog â a mature swine (usually weighing more than 120 pounds)
Pig â (aka. piglet) a young swine (usually weighing less than 120 lbs.)
Sow â a mature female swine
Sheep

Ewe â a female sheep
Lamb â a sheep less than one year in age
Ram â a male sheep
Wether â a castrated male sheep

Turkeys
Poult â is a young domestic turkey
Hen â an adult female turkey
Tom â is a male turkey
Horse
Equine â name of the family that includes horses, donkeys and zebras
Foal â an animal in the equine family, of either sex, that is one year old or younger
Colt â a male horse under the age of four
Filly â a female horse under the age of four
Gelding â a castrated animal of the equine family
Pony â a mature horse that measures less than 14.2hands
Mare â an adult female horse
Stallion â an adult male horse
Draft Horse â a large horse bred for hard, heavy tasks such as ploughing and farm labor
Hand â a non-SI unit of measurement that equals four inches
Donkey & Mule
Foal â an animal in the equine family, of either sex, that is one year old or younger
Jenny â a female donkey
Jack â a male donkey
Mule â is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse
Donkey â a domesticated animal of the equine family primarily used as a working animal
Rabbit
Kit â a young rabbit
Doe â a female rabbit
Buck â a male rabbit
