SUBJECT: SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

COURSE: FNBE APRIL 2013 INTAKE
2. Journal: Self-Concept
We start off our first lecture of this semester's social psychology class with the topic
calledSelf-Concept.It begins with an activity where we're told to define ourselves in
any way we want as we put those answers after 'I am...' . Some say 'i am fat' or 'i am
me' and a lot of different and surprising answers from my classmates, the specific
beliefs by which you define yourself, are your self-schemes. I described myself based
on my personal traits such as 'I am playful' so this made me realize that these
decisions is referred to as Self & Culture We also get to know what Spotlight effect
means, it is that we tend to see ourselves under the spotlight. It became more
understandable knowing about Self-Knowing when it was given a good example, to
prove it i'll give an example of my own, given the opportunity to go to a university by
my dad i think of my behaviour, should i accept or turn it down? so this is based on
predicting your behaviour and also predicting your feelings when you thinkn of what
is going to happen.
In the next sub-topic is Self-serving bias which features a video, my mind became
more open as i learned to know who are those that are self-serving bias such that it is
the propensity to underestimate the commonality of one's abilities and one's desirable
or successful behaviours is known as false uniqueness effect. After that was an
activity to test out 'The Power of Positive Thinking' called The Happy Step In by Paul
McKenna. First off was to think of someone you admire, vividly imagine them
standing in front of you, and as the process goes it comes to an ending where we
became that person, there we might notice the good feelings around the body and so it
is told that we spread those feelings all around from the body, after that we imagine
having that feeling in our everyday life. This is a very effective thing to do, which i
think it would really relieve your stress for the whole day. Other activity includes
Robert Holden's (the happiness physcologist ) formula. lastly was the Self-Efficacy, it
is how competent you feel to do something. This made me realize all those things that
i really think that i can be good at and not until i know those that i can't control over
my outcomes.
3. Journal: The Powers and Perils of Intuition
This topic focuses a lot more with the individual's thinking. The main theme of this is
that our thinking is partially controlled and partially automatic. So thinking is divided
into two which are controlled and automatic thinking. i was able to realize their
differernces between them. The sub-topic Overestimating teaches you about
understanding how we can overestimate our own way of thought, something that
things didn't turn out like how you want it to be, your initial planning. There is a name
for it, Planning Fallacy.
Next sub-topic is about Constructing memories, on a side note the lecturer taught me
that an individual who tries to construct fake memories always brings his or her eyes
on the top-left corner in which i find that very interesting. This one made me realize
the things that i didn't really thought of that if it is real or not such as that in my mind
i confirmed myself that dinosaur is a lizard after watching researches from
professional scientists but it is not like anyone have actually seen it, recently the
scientists have found that the fossil dinosaur that they're researching actually have
feathers which really surprised me.
In an activity we're told to be in groups and share what we thought about the given
two questions which are 'five years ago, how do you feel about your parents and this
country?'. The resultis that people whose attitudes have changed often insist that they
have always felt much as they now feel, that was exactly what i was doing when we're
in that activity. This made me realize that for example, i didn't actually care about my
country five years ago and just when the question came i only thought of what i feel
about it now.
Lastly we have an activity where we all gather up and make a circle shape, we were
told to tell about how you think about that person (that you can choose anyone) and
compare them between what you thought of them at first and what do you think
about tht person now. I chose Jake, my initial thought that he looks like a quiet guy,
easy to be friends with and also smart but as i can see now things are not going what i
expected, he was actually more than that. This activity explains you that attitudes may
sometimes change from time to time.
4. Journal: Vision
Vision is a state of being able to see and of course it has a big role in social
psychology. Personally most of the things that was explained was what i learned last
year in general science physics. Things explained are such as the definition of light,
structures of the eye and showing the common disorders of vision.
The Effect of Color, to start this sub-topic we were shown a picture of what explains
the effect of the colors. An image of a house showing different colored rooms, one of
the examples is the office which is a blue colored room, it is recommended because
blue is the most productive color. understanding more about colors things can be a bit
judgemental such as that from the study of the affective meanings of color, some say
that black and grey are bad, yellow white and grey are weak. I couldn't find any
conclusion to this and so i decided to not believe about it.
Still, colors are the most important part of our vision. Take red as example, it
enhances men's attraction to women but it doesn't have any effect if we switch the
genders. Men seem unaware of the red color effect. But let's say that it has been
proven around the world how effective it is, such as the red carpet which attracts
attention, the red dresses, valentines and many more.
Next is the visual system, this sub-topic is mostly done practically to show some
optical illusions and to test our own thinking such that a picture was given that was
shown an image of either a rabbit or a duck, some first found out that it was a rabbit
but some found out that it's a duck at first sight. More examples are shown such as the
Ambigous stimulas, Inattentional Blindness, subjective contours, Relative Size, and a
lot more. The next one was about Visual illusions, same as before we look at different
pictures. Most of them are mind-blowing making us trying to believe that it looks like
that at first sight. At the end of the lesson i personally feel tired, there was too much
to think about while looking at the images but it was a great experience to learn
something like that.
