We employ approximately 11,200 employees in at 26 operating sites in 11 countries across four continents. Novelis is the only industry player with the capability to produce high-end rolled products in all four major market regions of the world.
Â
In particular, our operations across Europe, and specifically our assets in Germany, have long played a key role in the success of the global organization. And clearly with the opening of this recycling center, the importance of this region grows even further.
We are strategically focused on growing our leadership across our key market segments of can, automotive and specialties. And weâre very proud of the partnerships weâve developed with our customers -- some of the worldâs leading brands. Many of these relationships span decades.
Sustainability is driving our business at Novelis. We follow the three pronged approach of sustainability, evaluating economic, environmental and social needs.
We began measuring our progress in a focused and holistic manner in 2011 through the function of a chief sustainability officer and an annual sustainability report.
One way to look at the changes Iâm talking about is illustrated by this basic diagram of the aluminum production process â a process that has remained relatively the same on many levels for the past 25 years.
What you see here is that the aluminum production process has largely been a linear model â starting at the bauxite mine, moving to alumina refining, to smelting, casting, through rolling operations and into the marketplace â and repeat. Aluminum is produced in the upstream and sold or stored at this point here, the line between upstream and downstream production. The establishment of LME warehouses as a destination of last resort â a purpose it no longer serves â exemplifies this disconnect between primary producers and end-use customers.
This model is predominantly upstream-oriented â meaning that the factors that drove the market were determined by forces far away from the demands of the ultimate customer.
The problem is that since then, the end-use portion of this model â the expanding customer applications and consumer adoption of aluminum â has changed significantly, which in turn necessitates dramatic changes in how these customer needs are best served.
This new way of operating entails shifting our business model from a traditional linear one to an increasingly closed loop one . This shift will enable us to accelerate and capitalize on the sustainability potential of aluminum as a lightweight, infinitely recyclable metal â and to dramatically reduce the embedded carbon in our products.
And, in an increasingly energy- and carbon-constrained operating environment, we are convinced transforming our business to be part of the circular economy will be a key source of competitive advantage for our company â and for our customers.
And we are investing heavily to grow with our customers. In fact, we have invested nearly $2 billion over the past three years in rolling, finishing and recycling operations to meet the growing demand for sustainable rolled aluminum in our premium markets.
Â
Our extensive global footprint of superior manufacturing assets and a talented workforce allows us to reliably meet the needs of our customers, wherever they operate.
So, we established an ambitious set of sustainability targets in 2011 and we havenât looked back since. At the time, we were committing to do things we didnât yet know how to do, using technologies we had not yet invented. However, we have fundamental confidence in Novelisâ ability to create and apply the disruptive innovations required to drive the radical change we envision.
This ambitious set of goals a number of key areas including profitability, water usage, landfill waste, safety, green house gas emissions and recycling.
We have made steady progress on our goals in the past three years, reporting annually through our Novelis Sustainability Report. Here you see our most recently reported results.
At the core of our companyâs transformation is our unprecedented target to use 80 percent recycled inputs by 2020, compared to 33 percent three years ago. This target has implications for nearly every aspect of our business â from the basic design of our products and our portfolio mix, to the structure of our supply chain and our relationships with our customers. But when we reach it, we will cut our absolute, life cycle greenhouse gas emissions in half, even with significantly increased production, and achieve our objective to be the low-carbon aluminum producer.

Â
By the end of FY14, we reached 46 percent recycled inputs, putting us firmly on track to achieve our interim goal of 50 percent by 2015. The opening of this facility -- the worldâs largest aluminum recycling center -- firmly solidifies Novelisâ position as the largest recycler of aluminum in the world and is a critical achievement in our long-term recycling strategy.
In contrast to other aluminum companies, Novelis is not focused on primary smelting as a source of metal, but rather on maximizing recycling. As the leading low carbon aluminum maker, we offer our customers the ability to make products with a smaller environmental footprint.
Â
By 2020 we aim to have 80% of our aluminum made from recycled metal.
Â
In our first year of this commitment, we moved from 33% to 39% recycled content. We are reporting our progress on an annual basis through our sustainability report.
In moving to 80%, we will eliminate 10 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions from the aluminum production chain.
We are investing in growing our recycling capacity worldwide from 1.2 million to 2.1 million metric tons in 2015.
And with the opening of our new recycling center in Korea, Novelis has become the worldâs leader in aluminum recycling.
Nobody else in our business is doing this or can do this. We are pursuing this goal on a variety of fronts â not just by increasing our scrap inputs and expanding our plants, but also by working with our customers to develop new recycle-friendly products and closed-loop recycling systems.
Increasing recycled capacity and advancing our leadership in recycling technology is key to the progress weâve made. Since 2011, Novelis has invested approximately $500 million to expand its recycling network, doubling its recycling capacity to 2.1 million metric tons per year.
[CLICK]
Weâve invested in every region of the world where we operate, including major recycling expansions in Asia, South America and Europe. Beyond capacity, weâre also focused on developing the latest technologies in sorting, melting and casting to expand our sourcing capabilities and ensure the highest levels of operational efficiency.
Â
While our increased use of recycled aluminum â and corresponding decreased reliance on primary aluminum â is central to our shift toward a closed loop and low carbon business model, itâs just one element of our broader sustainability strategy. We are also focused on implementing sustainable manufacturing processes within our own operations, driven by targets to minimize energy and water use and send zero waste to landfill.
As part of this strategy, we recently opened the worldâs largest aluminum recycling center in Nachterstedt, Germany. The Nachterstedt Recycling Center features state-of-the-art technology for aluminum scrap sorting, de-coating, melting and casting. The facility gives Novelis the flexibility to process a wide range of scrap types, creating a more efficient closed-loop recycling system and increasing Europe's domestic scrap consumption.
We believe that disruptive innovation and groundbreaking technology will be the essential enablers for achieving our ambitious business and sustainability goals. Reaching 80% recycled inputs â and fully capitalizing on the sustainability potential of aluminum â will require rethinking the fundamental design of our products, and re-engineering the processes to make them.
Our Global Research & Technology Center, located near our headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, serves as a global hub for our research and development efforts and has put Novelis at the forefront of our industry. There, our scientists, researchers and engineers work together under one roof â alongside our commercial and operational teams and in close cooperation with our customers â to create the product and process innovations to meet our customersâ needs today, and develop the next-generation, low-carbon aluminum products of the future. For example, Jaguarâs brand-new XE features recycled content alloys designed by our Novelis engineers.
We also recently marked the commercial debut of evercanâą â the worldâs first independently certified, high recycle content aluminum beverage can sheet, which is made of at least 90% recycled material.
[CLICK]
Earlier this year, Atlanta-based Red Hare Brewing Company announced it would package its craft beer exclusively in cans made of Novelisâ evercan aluminum sheet. The product is a technical breakthrough and represents a huge step forward in enabling aluminum to realize its full sustainability potential. We remain focused on closing the gap to our ultimate goal of creating an up to 100 percent recycled content aluminum beverage can.
We will also focus on âContinuing our Leadershipâ:
One of the ways we are âraising the barâ and improving our competitive advantage is through technology. Through our sheer size and ability to process recycled aluminum, we now have the ability in North America to certify 5182 can end at 85% recycled content. When you combine the 3104 90% recycled content, we are now able to promote a can with greater than 85% recycled content. This is a true competitive advantage for Novelis because it raises the recycled content by at least 15% for the total can, separating from any other can sheet on the market.
With Nachterstedt now up and running, Europe is expected to have this same certification by Spring of next year.
We are seeking to have all our 3104 aluminum certified as evercan in every Region by the end of FY18.
Our shift toward a closed loop and low carbon approach is also requiring us to engage and partner with a broader and more diverse set of stakeholders to challenge and inform our thinking, and to advance shared objectives that cannot be achieved on our own.

Â
As part of our partnership efforts, we have just launched a new partnership with the World Wildlife Fund. Novelis was accepted into WWFâs Climate Savers Program, an exclusive initiative to encourage companies to reduce their operational carbon footprint and act as agents of change within their spheres of influence. Novelis is the only metals company accepted into this exclusive program.
Since we began our sustainability journey, we have made great strides and filled in many of the unknowns â though certainly many challenges and uncertainties remain. In the process,
weâve also rocked the boat, at times seeking to move faster or more aggressively on sustainability than some of our stakeholders. But I am firmly convinced that this circular economy transformation Novelis is leading is what society wants â and what the planet and the global economy need â and that it will be the key driver of our companyâs long-term success.
