3
• The process of exploring collections of books, articles, or information on the Web to
investigate a topic generally without necessarily knowing at the initial stage, what the seeker
will find.
• Resource discovery activity involve searching for the appropriate service, node, or data type
that match the requirements of applications such as file sharing, Grid applications, Cloud
applications etc.
• The resource discovery methods can be engineered based on various network models
including centralized, decentralized, and hierarchical with varying degree of scalability, fault-
tolerance, and network performance
4
TYPES:
Discovery tools can be divided into 2 parts:
• Open source
• Commercial
5
ADVANTAGES:
• Discovery tools provides access to a large amount of materials of many different
types.
• Discovery tools are fast since searching is in local or centralized index. (even
though these are large.)
• They focus primarily on electronic full text.
• They are easy to use.
• Quality of results.
• Variety of resources available.
• Results can be save.
• Discovery resolution and access.

• Google Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine that indexes the full text or metadata
of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines. Released in beta in
November 2004, the Google Scholar index includes most peer-reviewed online academic journals and
books, theses and dissertations, preprints, abstracts, technical reports, conference papers and other
scholarly literature, including court opinions and patents.
• Google Scholar arose out of a discussion between Alex Verstak and Anurag Acharya, both of whom were
then working on building Google's main web index. Their goal was to "make the world's problem solvers
10% more efficient“
• This goal is reflected in the Google Scholar's advertising slogan – "Stand on the shoulders of giants" –
taken from a quote by holy Bernard of Chartres.
9
FEATURES :
• Google Scholar allows users to search for digital or physical copies of articles, whether
online or in libraries.
• It indexes "full-text journal articles, technical reports, preprints, theses, books, and
other documents, including selected Web pages that are deemed to be 'scholarly.
• Search all scholarly literature from one convenient place
• Explore related works, citations, authors, and publications
• Locate the complete document through your library or on the web
• Keep up with recent developments in any area of research
• Check who's citing your publications, create a public author profile
10
RANKING PROCESS:
Google Scholar aims to rank documents the way
researchers do, weighing the full text of each
document, where it was published, who it was written
by, as well as how often and how recently it has been
cited in other scholarly literature.

EBSCO Discovery Service brings together the most comprehensive
collection of content, while providing users with the ease and
simplicity that comes with delivering the top results on the first
page. To keep pace with a continuously growing collection of
content from publisher partnerships, our customers' catalogs and
institutional repositories, as well as the rich metadata that comes
with top subject indexes, EDS employs a multi-faceted relevance
ranking methodology that is the foundation of our premier search
and discovery platform.
13
FUNCTIONS:
Advocating for the library community:
EBSCO is passionate about libraries and the work they do. Sponsorships, awards and donations
are just some of the ways which shows the commitment for helping libraries succeed.
• Scholarships for librarians to attend national conferences
• Awards for library innovation and outstanding books
• Grants for libraries to adopt solar energy
• Free databases and open access initiatives
• Contributions to open source projects that give libraries more choice
14
FUNCTIONS (CONT.)
Maximizing Accuracy with Field Ranking:
Every record in EBSCO Discovery Service contains numerous fields that can assist the
user in locating the information they seek. How a field is used by a search engine
determines the relevance ranking, and thus how high on the search results, any given
record appears for a search. With exact matches favored over partial matches, the
most influential fields in EDS are:
• Matches on subject headings
• Term appearance in the title
• Author-supplied keywords
• Keywords within abstracts
• Match on keywords in the full text
15
FUNCTIONS (CONT.)
Superior Value Ranking:
Recognizing that the value of a record is not derived only from terms from the user, EBSCO
Discovery Service takes into account certain attributes when determining the relevance. Specific
attributes that are considered include:
• Currency in publication means that more recent articles will rank higher
• Type of publication in relation to the search terms
• Peer-Reviewed status assists the academic researcher in quickly locating key information in their field
• Length of article ensures that when other factors are equal, a shorter article is considered less valuable

• The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a website that lists open access
journals and is maintained by Infrastructure Services for Open Access (IS4OA).The
project defines open access journals as scientific and scholarly journals that meet high
quality standards by exercising peer review or editorial quality control and "use a
funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for
access". The Budapest Open Access Initiative's definition of open access is used to
define required rights given to users, for the journal to be included in the DOAJ, as the
rights to "read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of
these articles". The aim of DOAJ is to "increase the visibility and ease of use of open
access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and
impact“

CONCLUSION
“Resource discovery” has many meanings, and it is now being
defined as library research software that allows a library user to
search multiple Web-based resources simultaneously and generate
usable search results.
A discovery service is an online library searching tool that provides
an all-in-one interface for finding both local library items and online
subscription and open access resources.

Resource discovery tools

  • 2. 2 Creator: Mubassira Mahmuda Supty M.A , Department of Information Science and Library Management University of Dhaka.
  • 4. • The process of exploring collections of books, articles, or information on the Web to investigate a topic generally without necessarily knowing at the initial stage, what the seeker will find. • Resource discovery activity involve searching for the appropriate service, node, or data type that match the requirements of applications such as file sharing, Grid applications, Cloud applications etc. • The resource discovery methods can be engineered based on various network models including centralized, decentralized, and hierarchical with varying degree of scalability, fault- tolerance, and network performance 4
  • 5. TYPES: Discovery tools can be divided into 2 parts: • Open source • Commercial 5
  • 6. ADVANTAGES: • Discovery tools provides access to a large amount of materials of many different types. • Discovery tools are fast since searching is in local or centralized index. (even though these are large.) • They focus primarily on electronic full text. • They are easy to use. • Quality of results. • Variety of resources available. • Results can be save. • Discovery resolution and access. 6

  • 9. • Google Scholar is a freely accessible web search engine that indexes the full text or metadata of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines. Released in beta in November 2004, the Google Scholar index includes most peer-reviewed online academic journals and books, theses and dissertations, preprints, abstracts, technical reports, conference papers and other scholarly literature, including court opinions and patents. • Google Scholar arose out of a discussion between Alex Verstak and Anurag Acharya, both of whom were then working on building Google's main web index. Their goal was to "make the world's problem solvers 10% more efficient“ • This goal is reflected in the Google Scholar's advertising slogan – "Stand on the shoulders of giants" – taken from a quote by holy Bernard of Chartres. 9
  • 10. FEATURES : • Google Scholar allows users to search for digital or physical copies of articles, whether online or in libraries. • It indexes "full-text journal articles, technical reports, preprints, theses, books, and other documents, including selected Web pages that are deemed to be 'scholarly. • Search all scholarly literature from one convenient place • Explore related works, citations, authors, and publications • Locate the complete document through your library or on the web • Keep up with recent developments in any area of research • Check who's citing your publications, create a public author profile 10
  • 11. RANKING PROCESS: Google Scholar aims to rank documents the way researchers do, weighing the full text of each document, where it was published, who it was written by, as well as how often and how recently it has been cited in other scholarly literature. 11

  • 13. EBSCO Discovery Service brings together the most comprehensive collection of content, while providing users with the ease and simplicity that comes with delivering the top results on the first page. To keep pace with a continuously growing collection of content from publisher partnerships, our customers' catalogs and institutional repositories, as well as the rich metadata that comes with top subject indexes, EDS employs a multi-faceted relevance ranking methodology that is the foundation of our premier search and discovery platform. 13
  • 14. FUNCTIONS: Advocating for the library community: EBSCO is passionate about libraries and the work they do. Sponsorships, awards and donations are just some of the ways which shows the commitment for helping libraries succeed. • Scholarships for librarians to attend national conferences • Awards for library innovation and outstanding books • Grants for libraries to adopt solar energy • Free databases and open access initiatives • Contributions to open source projects that give libraries more choice 14
  • 15. FUNCTIONS (CONT.) Maximizing Accuracy with Field Ranking: Every record in EBSCO Discovery Service contains numerous fields that can assist the user in locating the information they seek. How a field is used by a search engine determines the relevance ranking, and thus how high on the search results, any given record appears for a search. With exact matches favored over partial matches, the most influential fields in EDS are: • Matches on subject headings • Term appearance in the title • Author-supplied keywords • Keywords within abstracts • Match on keywords in the full text 15
  • 16. FUNCTIONS (CONT.) Superior Value Ranking: Recognizing that the value of a record is not derived only from terms from the user, EBSCO Discovery Service takes into account certain attributes when determining the relevance. Specific attributes that are considered include: • Currency in publication means that more recent articles will rank higher • Type of publication in relation to the search terms • Peer-Reviewed status assists the academic researcher in quickly locating key information in their field • Length of article ensures that when other factors are equal, a shorter article is considered less valuable 16
