Using Keywords


            If you want to find what your looking for in
            the least amount of time, keywords is the
            answer. Hundreds of thousands of results
            are worthless if your search is not yielding
            not the information your after.
Using Keywords

When searching you want to make sure you are using
words that are unique and descriptive. Try combining these
words in different ways to yield the best results.

Use double quotes when you want to find the exact phrase
you type in the search bar. Example: “How to cook a
lobster”

The results with double quotes will differ from those without
quotes and even though you want to find out how to cook a
lobster that doesn‟t mean you are limited to those search
terms. Without quotes your search will include ANY of the
words in your search but adding the quotes ensures ALL
words are included.
Using Keywords

        Another thing to remember is you don‟t always have to write it as
        your saying it. Let the search engine fill in the blanks. Example:
        Methods cooking lobster. Your keywords don‟t include „for‟ and „a‟
        so you can omit those.

        Your initial search will help you narrow down exactly what your
        looking for as you may come across new words (and thus a new
        search) that better describe what your after.

        Let‟s say your searching dogs. If you want to narrow your search
        you can use hyponyms (more specific terms) like Labrador
        Retreiver, Boston Terrier or German Shepherd. Too narrow? Take
        a step back and try using hypenyms (more general or broad
        terms) and try dogs or pets.
Using Keywords

             It pays to know the technical terms in your
             industry. This can have a big influence on your
             results. Think of the difference between glass
             installer and glazier, iron forger and blacksmith.
             These will yield different results because the
             terminology is different so be aware of the
             vocabulary.

             As a rule of thumb use all lowercase when
             searching. Most search engines use only
             lowercase anyway but some will pay attention to
             the case combinations you supply.
Using Keywords

Another thing to be mindful of is spelling. Again,
most search engines now offer a spell check of
some sort but not all. In Google‟s case it will
either search exactly what you typed but prompt
“did you mean ____” (with correct spelling
inserted) or it will say “showing results for”_____
(your query but with the misspelled word
corrected) and you will have the option to instead
search for exactly what you typed (with the
spelling error- according to Google) Also consider
the differences in Canadian vs. American vs.
British spelling. Will the keyword „colour' yield the
same results as „color‟?

  • 4. Using Keywords If you want to find what your looking for in the least amount of time, keywords is the answer. Hundreds of thousands of results are worthless if your search is not yielding not the information your after.
  • 5. Using Keywords When searching you want to make sure you are using words that are unique and descriptive. Try combining these words in different ways to yield the best results. Use double quotes when you want to find the exact phrase you type in the search bar. Example: “How to cook a lobster” The results with double quotes will differ from those without quotes and even though you want to find out how to cook a lobster that doesn‟t mean you are limited to those search terms. Without quotes your search will include ANY of the words in your search but adding the quotes ensures ALL words are included.
  • 6. Using Keywords Another thing to remember is you don‟t always have to write it as your saying it. Let the search engine fill in the blanks. Example: Methods cooking lobster. Your keywords don‟t include „for‟ and „a‟ so you can omit those. Your initial search will help you narrow down exactly what your looking for as you may come across new words (and thus a new search) that better describe what your after. Let‟s say your searching dogs. If you want to narrow your search you can use hyponyms (more specific terms) like Labrador Retreiver, Boston Terrier or German Shepherd. Too narrow? Take a step back and try using hypenyms (more general or broad terms) and try dogs or pets.
  • 7. Using Keywords It pays to know the technical terms in your industry. This can have a big influence on your results. Think of the difference between glass installer and glazier, iron forger and blacksmith. These will yield different results because the terminology is different so be aware of the vocabulary. As a rule of thumb use all lowercase when searching. Most search engines use only lowercase anyway but some will pay attention to the case combinations you supply.
  • 8. Using Keywords Another thing to be mindful of is spelling. Again, most search engines now offer a spell check of some sort but not all. In Google‟s case it will either search exactly what you typed but prompt “did you mean ____” (with correct spelling inserted) or it will say “showing results for”_____ (your query but with the misspelled word corrected) and you will have the option to instead search for exactly what you typed (with the spelling error- according to Google) Also consider the differences in Canadian vs. American vs. British spelling. Will the keyword „colour' yield the same results as „color‟?
