Brazilian music has been influenced by African, European, and indigenous American styles. It has gone through classical, romantic, and various popular periods. During the classical period in Brazil, King John VI brought European composers who greatly impacted Brazilian music. The first great Brazilian composer, Jose Mauricio Nunes Garcia, composed the first Brazilian opera. In the romantic period, Francisco Manuel da Silva was influential and founded the Rio de Janeiro Music Conservatory. Today, Brazilian music includes diverse popular styles like rock and folk, while classical styles remain part of the culture.

Classical Music When John VI of Portugal came to Brazil he brought with him a fantastic musical library consisting of sounds from the House of Braganca, which was one of the best composers of the time. John IV ordered the building of many theaters in Brazil and ordered in many composers from Europe, many composers such as Mozart and Haydn greatly influenced Brazilian music at this time. The first great composers that came from Brazil was Jose mauricioNunes Garcia, he composed the first opera written in Brazil and led the way for many of Brazils great musical minds.
4. Romantic Period A student of Nunes Garcia was Francisco Manuel da Silva, he was the only composer who had great influence during this time. He founded the Musical Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro, and he also wrote the Brazilian national anthem. Much of the focus of this period was on that of opera, many opera houses were built during this time and Antonio Carlos Gomes was the man who wrote the first Brazilian Opera.
5. Today's Popular Brazilian Music Brazilian music has many different kinds of popular music today that ranges from Brazilian Rock to Folk music and still opera. Many of the classical operas and traditional music styles are still celebrated in Brazil. The unique style of contemporary and classical music that is performed and found in Brazil is what makes it a unique part of its culture.
