View the Ashby Memory Method presentation to see how patients and caregiver are noticing a difference in the quality of life of patients with dementia and Alzheimer's.
Hi there, my name _________________. In this presentation, you will learn more about the Ashby Memory Method and the importance of Brain Fitness for Seniors experiencing Memory Loss.
What is the Ashby Memory Method? It is Brain Fitness when you need it most. It is “Paper-based memory exercises and activities scientifically designed to improve memory for persons with memory loss.” There are “No adverse side effects” and There is “No software to learn”. Simply put, we use special brain exercises to stimulate the healthy areas of the brain to compensate for areas that have been affected by the disease process.
The Ashby Memory Method is easy to begin: Twice a week, for up to an hour, a facilitator sits down one-on-one with a participant and works through one of the pre-selected Ashby Memory Method booklets. The booklets are “pre-selected” based on the participant’s interests, so the materials are interesting, relevant and more enjoyable. And it can be delivered anywhere. This means the program is available where ever the participant lives –at their home or in a care facility.
The Ashby Memory Method program methodology is: Based on the work of the late Dr. Mira Ashby who received the Order of Canada in 1984 for her work with the brain injured. Our program treats Alzheimer’s disease as a “slowly evolving brain injury”, so it is based on the science used to treat Traumatic Brain Injuries. And most importantly, our program improves the qualify of life for the participant and their families. Are you aware that early to moderate Alzheimer’s does not significantly affect the cerebral cortex? The cerebral cortex is the outer wrinkly area of the brain that stores our long term memories. But rather Alzheimer’s affects the pathways which connect us to where long term memories are processed in the brain. To use an analogy: If you were driving home and the road ahead was washed out, does that mean your home is gone? No, but you will have to take a new route to get home again. Similarly, the Ashby Memory Method stimulates the brain to use healthy pathways to reconnect to long term memories. Our program also appears to improve short-term memory as well. Let’s now look at how improving memory leads to improving the quality of life for a participant and their family.
The Mini-Mental State Examination, or MMSE, is a simple cognitive test which is scored out of 30 points. A person with no memory loss would score 30, and as memory declines the MMSE score will become lower. If you refer to the chart you will see that as the MMSE score decreases the ability to perform Activities of Daily Living is affected. It is this loss of ability to perform Activities of Daily Living that often has a profound affect on an individual’s ability to remain independent. Loss of independence is directly related to earlier nursing home admissions for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
The good news is the Ashby Memory Method has been tested and demonstrated excellent results. Let’s look at our Field Testing over a 12 month period. The blue line on the graph shows changes in MMSE scores for 50 individuals on the Ashby Memory Method at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. We can see an increase in the MMSE scores at 3 months, a further increase at 6 months, and then stabilizing for a total average MMSE improvement of +1.9 points. This graph only shows the first 12 months but we are seeing improvements lasting more than 2 years. To see what happens without treatment we turn to published clinical studies. <click>
The yellow arrow on the graph is from a published review of 37 clinical studies involving almost 3,500 patients that calculated that the average annual rate of decline in MMSE was -3.3 points for people with Alzheimer’s disease. When compared to our field testing that’s a difference after one year of 5.2 MMSE points! By starting the Ashby Memory Method program there is real help for Alzheimer’s today and greater hope for tomorrow.
Can you see how improving, stabilizing, or slowing the decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease can have a significant impact on Quality of Life?
Let’s look at some sample exercises. Here we show a sample Word Search and we give you the answers on the next page. Our word searches come in 9 different levels of challenge and are based on the participant’s selected topics of interest.
Here is a sample Question & Answer. A paragraph is read out loud, a question is asked, and there is a multiple choice for the answer. Remember that these exercises are based on topics pre-selected to be interesting and relevant to the participant.
And, finally let’s look at a Sample Color Stroop Exercise. The idea is to state the color of the word not what it says. It’s actually more difficult than it looks. This is only a small sample of the exercises but it gives you an understanding of how easy and enjoyable the sessions are. We also have exercises for Targeted Responses, Tactile Stimulation, Inferences, Sequences, Scent Recognition, Decision Tree, and a number of other areas which have been shown to be extremely beneficial in maintaining and improving thinking and cognition for person’s with Alzheimer’s disease.
At the end of each session you get a chance to reflect and evaluate how the session went and how the participant is doing. The facilitator will periodically re-measure the participant’s MMSE and help complete a Quality of Life survey to confirm improvements associated with using the Ashby Memory Method.
There are 3 common reasons people delay: My parent or spouse does not admit they have a memory loss issue. I would suggest that you try to encourage them by saying this is Brain Fitness for Seniors so that you can keep your independence. Keep in mind that the program materials do not state Alzheimer’s or dementia. We need to talk about this as a family before we start. This is true, but I encourage you to try it for 8 weeks and then talk as a family. What do you have to lose? Cost. By having a certified facilitator come in for 2 hours each week you will get a welcome break but more importantly you will see that your parent or spouse will “feel” better and become less agitated, have less anxiety, less wandering and be in a better mood. The sooner you start the more likely you are to delay the higher costs that come with 24 hour care.
Don’t wait for a crisis to begin. Your dad takes out the garbage and gets lost. Your mom leaves the stove on high or water running in the sink. Unfortunately a “crisis” is all too often a wake-up call for the family. As with all serious illnesses, the sooner we begin treatment the better the results.
It’s simple to start now: Talk to the company that is providing care today to see if they offer the Ashby Memory Method. Try it for 8 weeks and notice the improvements. Rremember you can choose to stop the program at any time. There is no long term contract – use the program for as long as you like, stop whenever you want.
This will become the participant’s favourite 2 hours of their week. Call us and we will get you in touch with a certified facilitator in your area. Thank you.
