2. TYPES OF LIGHTING
Incandescent Lighting
High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting
Compact Fluorescent Lighting
LED Lighting
3. Incandescent Lighting:
• Also called as tungsten filament bulb.
• Traditionally used light source.
• They are energy inefficient and hence are
replaced in many applications by LEDs, HIDs.
• A 60 watt incandescent bulb costs upto
Rs.10 per piece.
• The luminous energy of a typical incandescent
bulb is 16 lumens/watt.
Advantages :
Light quality and color are very consistent.
Disadvantages :
Requires lot of energy and faster degradation of filament
leading to shorter lifespan.
Use :
Mostly used in indoors.
4. HID LIGHTING:
• These lamps provide high luminous efficiency.
• Long life span.
• Economical light source.
• Price depends on the various types and also sizes.
• The highest- efficiency halogen bulbs produce 38
lumens/watt.
Advantages :
Their blue light is close to natural daylight, so they
provide greater visibility.
Disadvantages :
They are expensive when you buy it and even more
expensive when you replace it.
Use :
Mostly used in car headlights.
5. CFL LIGHTING :
• Designed to replace an incandescent light bulb
• The lamp use a tube which can be curved or
folded.
• Lasts 8-15 times longer than incandescent
bulbs.
• Their luminous efficiency is 50-70 lumens/watt.
Advantages :
Much more efficient then incandescent bulbs
and highly versatile.
Disadvantages :
The presence of mercury in it makes it unfit for
environment. It needs to be disposed off
correctly.
Uses :
Used in residential applications, for ceilings,
table lamps.
6. LED LIGHTING :
• Most energy efficient lights.
• Wide applications, used almost everywhere.
• Long life span of about 2 years.
• 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 18 watts LEDs are normally used and
they cost Rs. 90-180 according to the watts.
• They come a warranty of 2 years.
• There are various different shapes, sizes and colors and
types of LED lights.
Advantages :
They are energy efficient.
Can be used anywhere and everywhere.
Different colors available.
Disadvantages :
Voltage sensitive, they are provided with a choke for
regulating high power.
7. Uses :
• Used in flood lights.
• Used in street lights.
• Used for garden lights.
• Used in traffic signals.
• Used in advertisement boards.
• Used in all types of decorating lights.
• Used in panels for ceiling lights.
Now a days strip lights are also available in LEDs
whose cost starts from Rs. 40/m upto Rs. 110/m
depending on the type.
The cost of LED tubelights range from Rs.200 to
Rs.900 according to quality and offers lumens of
900 for 20 watts and about 3600 for 40 watts.
8. The garden lights of 8-12 watts produce 600-1000
lumens.
The panels lights are available in different shapes
and different cut out diameters and they range right
from 3watts upto 15 watts.
The price of panel lights starts from Rs. 200/ piece
and varies according to the shape and size.
Different wall lights are also available in various
shapes and sizes from 3-6 watts.
