Lets look at the music streaming market to get some context…
Spotify is currently ahead of the pack
competitive market between other music jukebox apps, there is more than just music streaming services. Differentiate between them. Showcase that spotify should be doing this because it
Apple Music, Pandora, Tidal and other apps are innovating fast trying to catch up and steal the spotlight
Some of their unique offerings and value propositions…
This is the question I’ve been trying to solve and I believe I have a solution…but first let me make it a bit more personal.
I was waiting for a few friends and our table to be prepared, while sitting at the Burma Love’s side bar. There was a lot of chatter but the music was still pronounced and easily heard. A few mainstream songs with lack of musicality came on one after another. I’m quite sensitive to poor music selection in bars so I thought I wish I could just play something that I know would fit much better with the ambiance.
A few electro-banging-nose bleed inducing songs later… I noticed one of the bartenders go to the back and start fiddling with the Spotify playlist. He actually played a smooth song that I had not heard before.
So, I tried to shazam it and failed miserably… and I’m not one to quit on the first shazam either, so I attempted multiple times, but the ambient noise was too much for my microphone. This led me to think, well I’m a spotify user…I wish I could just simply discover the music other spotify users are playing around me…Not only that I thought why shouldn’t I be able to have some control over the music here…especially if the bartenders and wait staff all have to go one by one and curate the music. This was my a-ha moment…
that experience made me start thinking of a Listening Party…where artists showcasing their new music to acquaintances and receive various feedback.
So I came up with a cool new feature that would integrate nicely into Spotify’s current feature set.
Integrate stories into mockups
add roadmap to the end
on site listening party differentiation
pocket of music
preview the bar through listening parties
How you might ask?
having users host Listening parties will make them power users on a different level. New users will be attracted to the idea of controlling the music, which in turn will lead them to downloading the app. A % of those downloads will convert to paying users.
