Analog Terrestrial TV Broadcast
• Mostly the national free-to-air terrestrial
• The traditional way of receiving television in Malaysia
• Several technologies exist throughout the globe such as
  (PAL, SÉCAM or NTSC).
• Malaysia are using Phase-Alternating Line (PAL)
• analogue transmission is 625 lines System B (VHF, channels 2-12) or
  System G (UHF channels 21-69)
• Reaches 98% of population
• were scheduled to be switched off in phases in 2015
          What is PAL ?
Phase-Alternating Line (PAL) is a color encoding system
used in broadcast television systems in large parts of the
world. PAL refers to the way in which the color
information on the video signal is reversed with each line,
which automatically corrects phase errors in the
transmission of the signal by canceling them out. PAL
systems have a refresh rate of 25 full frames per second.

Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcast

                                    STILL IN PROGRESS !!!

 • Digital terrestrial television (DTTV or DTT) is the technological
evolution of broadcast television and an advancement of analog
   television

List of standard around the world:

 1. ATSC standards in North America and South Korea

 2. Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB-T) is used in Japan

 3. DVB-T is the most prevalent, covering Europe, Australia, New
Zealand, Colombia and some countries of Africa

 4. DMB-T/H is China's own standard (including Hong Kong, though
Hong Kong's cable operators use DVB)

                            How about Malaysia ?
On Dec 2011, MCMC has regsitered the industry's Technical Code developed
under MTSFB as the Commission Determination on the Mandatory Standard for Free To
Air Transmission of Digital Terrestrial Television Service
 -wiki

“four companies out of the eight which submitted their bids for the digital terrestrial
television broadcasting (DTTB) infrastructure build-up have been shortlisted. Celcom
Axiata Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone International Bhd and Sapura Holdings

“After a final evaluation, only one out of the three shortlisted bidders will be selected and the
results of the second round evaluation are expected to be announced in July 2013.
The first roll-out of DTTB services to the public is then expected to be in early 2014 while full
nationwide coverage is targeted to be by end 2015.”

                 How about Malaysia ?
   • May be using DVB-T2 standard
   • May also adopt DMB-T/H standard
   • Generally set-top boxes (STB) as a receiver needed

   of the MEASAT-1 satellite
• Malaysian direct broadcast satellite (DBS) Pay TV service

• Astro has substantial coverage in commercial establishments such as bars,
   restaurants, hotels, dorms, and hospitals

I should say that ASTRO is the EMPEROR having ULTIMATE CONTROL of DBS market

  Mobile Television
                                   INTRODUCTION
Mobile TV in Malaysia is at a ”preliminary” or infancy stage.

Telcos, broadcasters and government bodies are gearing up
on trials and choosing the appropriate standards for the
future of mobile TV in Malaysia.

Trials are actively being carried out.

                            Main features
    • Smaller screen application
    • low energy consumption
 Television services in Malaysia
sulaim_qais@yahoo.com
  Mobile Television

       Standard implemented
    MBMS (iMB)
enables broadcast of content (such as live television) at the cellular transmitter level,
using the 3G or 4G licensed radio spectrum, and received on mobile terminals.

 DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) STILL IN PROGRESS
DVB-H technology work as regular television at your grandma house that you can
watch television just by having receiver, and a power supply for the device.
This technology tuned for mobile uses. DVB-H is not based on packet-switching
technology. This means, “there’s no streaming and lag associated with it.

 MediaFLO is a technology developed by Qualcomm for transmitting audio, video
and data to portable devices such as mobile phones and personal televisions, used
for mobile television. In the United States, the service powered by this technology
   was branded as FLO TV.

                                                      RECENTLY SILENCE

I’m predicting that telcos are waiting for the completion of DVB-T2 due to the fact that DVB-H
can be delivered over a pre-existing DVB-T network (digital terrestrial broadcast). Moreover,
DVB-H is designed to be combined with DVB-T networks.

      Internet TV

                                  Intro

 • Internet Television is a general term that covers the delivery of
television shows and other video content over the internet by video
streaming technology, typically by major traditional television
   broadcasters
 • one can have access to many channels but the quality is too poor and
sometimes the signal is not that stable.

   Different between IPTV and internet
Some of the key technical characteristics of an IPTV platform include:
• Broadcast channels, when provided over IP (rather than hybrid
DTT), are streamed using multicast technologies.
• Operators run extensive QOS practices, managing the delivery of
video to the consumer with minimal interruptions.
• Digital Rights Management (DRM) is standard, with operators
providing high levels of video asset management and encryption.
• Delivery of content is device specific. This used to mean STBs but
it's important to note that PCs are not excluded from true IPTV
delivery as they can operate in the same way as a STB.
• Provisioning, billing and customer service methods are the same as
  traditional TV platforms.

Television services in Malaysia
sulaim_qais@yahoo.com
  Transit television

 • Internet TV, however, relies on a much more open model by
streaming content over the public internet and is available to the
widest audience possible. Key characteristics can include:
 • Delivery of video can be encrypted, and DRM can be used, but is
   not always adopted.
 • Networks are not fully managed and there is no end-to-end
bandwidth provisioning as operators cannot control the networks -
as a result QOS is limited, but we are seeing development with
   some services.
 • Channels are streamed using unicast technologies with peer-to-
peer technologies also being used in some cases.
 • Customer service is largely online and customer management is
   much less developed.

  • 33. sulaim_qais@yahoo.com Internet TV Intro • Internet Television is a general term that covers the delivery of television shows and other video content over the internet by video streaming technology, typically by major traditional television broadcasters • one can have access to many channels but the quality is too poor and sometimes the signal is not that stable. Television services in Malaysia
  • 34. sulaim_qais@yahoo.com Transit television Different between IPTV and internet Some of the key technical characteristics of an IPTV platform include: • Broadcast channels, when provided over IP (rather than hybrid DTT), are streamed using multicast technologies. • Operators run extensive QOS practices, managing the delivery of video to the consumer with minimal interruptions. • Digital Rights Management (DRM) is standard, with operators providing high levels of video asset management and encryption. • Delivery of content is device specific. This used to mean STBs but it's important to note that PCs are not excluded from true IPTV delivery as they can operate in the same way as a STB. • Provisioning, billing and customer service methods are the same as traditional TV platforms. Television services in Malaysia
  • 35. sulaim_qais@yahoo.com Transit television • Internet TV, however, relies on a much more open model by streaming content over the public internet and is available to the widest audience possible. Key characteristics can include: • Delivery of video can be encrypted, and DRM can be used, but is not always adopted. • Networks are not fully managed and there is no end-to-end bandwidth provisioning as operators cannot control the networks - as a result QOS is limited, but we are seeing development with some services. • Channels are streamed using unicast technologies with peer-to- peer technologies also being used in some cases. • Customer service is largely online and customer management is much less developed.
