Adam Szudarski-Chp 11 Presentation--Medical Terminology

1. Endocrine System:--more specifically “emia” and “tropin” Adam Szudarski

2. -Emia According to medterms.com, “emia” is a suffix that relates to blood or of a substance that is in the blood. There are many instances within this class and the outside world where you will here such a suffix. Many common terms with the suffix “emia” include anemia and uremia.

3. Anemia Anemia-This is a condition of a lower than usual number of red blood cells within a persons blood. Anemia can also be used to describe someone that has a reduction in the amount of hemoglobin in the blood. One of the severe results of Anemia is a lack of oxygen reaching various tissues of the body through blood circulation.

5. Uremia Uremia- This is a condition where a person has an excess amount of urea and nitrogenous waste in the blood. One of the main reasons for uremia is due to a malfunctioning kidney Symptoms include headache, nausea, loss of energy, and sore mouth.

6. -Tropin Tropin-stimulating effect of a hormone or other substance on an organ or system. When studying the endocrine system you will come across this suffix quite often. 2 terms that are very common with this suffix are somatotropin and thyrotropin.

7. Somatotropin Somatotropin is a hormone that is produced by the anterior pituitary gland. The more common references to somatotropin are “growth hormone”. Somatotropin promotes growth of the body, at a cellular level.

8. Thyrotropin More often referred to as TRH or thyrotropin-releasing hormone is produced my the Hypothalamus, of the brain. TRH is responsible for stimulating the anterior pituitary gland. This stimulation results in the releasing of other hormones by the anterior pituitary gland.
