 Social media refers to interaction among people in which they can create,
share or exchange information and ideas in virtual
communities and networks.[1]
 “Social” – refers to instinctual needs humans have to connect with other
humans
 “Media” – what we use to make connections with other humans
 “Social Media” – Media used for social interaction. Social media is the use of
electronic and internet tools for the purpose of sharing and discussing
information and experiences with an online community.

History of Social Media
 The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was a website called
Six Degrees. It was named after the ‘six degrees of sepration theory and lasted
from 1997 to 2001. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and then make
friend with other users. Six Degrees even allowed those who didn’t register as
users to confirm friendships and connected quite a few people this way.
 From Six Degrees, the internet moved into the era of blogging and instant
messaging. Although blogging may not seem like social media precisely, the term
fits because people were suddenly able to communicate with a blog other
instantly as well as other readers. The term “blog” is a form of the phrase
“Weblog” which was coined by Jorn Barger, an early blogger that was the editor
of the site “Robot Wisdom.”
 In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched what would soon become the social
media giant that would set the bar for all other social media services.
Facebook is the number one social media website today and it currently
boasts over a billion users.
 However, back in 2004, Facebook (TheFacebook.com then) was launched
just for Harvard students. Zuckerberg saw the potential and released the
service to the world at the website facebook.com.
 In 2006, the popularity of text messaging or SMS inspired Jack Dorsey, Biz
Stone, Noah Glass and Evan Williams to create Twitter, a service that had
the unique distinction of allowing users to send “tweets”o 140 characters
or less. Today, Twitter has over 500 million users.

Negative effects
 Eye Problems: Prolonged use of display screens may weaken
eye sight.
Addiction: Internet shopping, online chatting can be
addictive.
Effect on health: Sitting all day in front of laptops/computers
may disturb body metabolism.
Reduction in physical activities
eaken eye sight.
Negative effects
 Teens who use Facebook more may have psychological disorders, including
antisocial behaviors, mania and aggressive tendencies
 The Desire to Compare: We compare ourselves to others in terms of looks,
travelled destinations, shopping sprees, friends and so on.
 Lack Of Interpersonal Skills: youth often ignore the importance and the
appropriate behaviour related to face-to-face contact.
 Sharing too much
 Social Distrust
Negative effects
 Online grooming: One of the most distressing aspects
of the social media is the growing evidence that may use
fake accounts on the social media to make friendships
with young children and teenagers.
 Violent Imagery: Spending a lot of time on the social
media sites like facebook can be dangerous, as often as a
result of political events around the world, explicit and
violent imagery get shown on the discussion threads.
 Misinformation: Enables the spread of false rumors and
unreliable information: 49.1% of users have read false
news on social media.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity
Disorder
The practice of logging on daily to see
hundreds of new photos, comments, and
user statuses have begun to take away
our ability to keep our focus on
something for more than an hour or two,
making a very real and possible effect of
SNS.
How to Prevent Social Media Threats??
Install theft protection software on all of the computers you use to
access social media accounts.
Make sure never to click the box to save your password when you
are on a public, work or laptop computer.
Use your real name whenever you sign up for social media
accounts.
Avoid giving out personal information on social media sites, such as
address, phone number or your birth date.
Change your privacy settings on all your social media accounts, so
that you have control of all the information that is posted.
How I (as a new user) formed my networks
 After setting up an account on a given platform – e.g. Facebook or Twitter, I then used the
search tools to find people with similar interests to me. For example:
- Career
- Sport
- Academic
- Campaigns
 For each interest, I was able to build up a small “virtual” network that looks something like
the diagram below
22
Everyone within this network of
interest is connected to each other
Some important facts
Today’s children spend an avg. 7
hours a day on entertainment

Conclusion and Implication
Parents need to work with their children on using safety precautions when on
social media sites. Thirty-one percent of youth surveyed by the National School
Board Association (2007) reported posting inappropriate pictures and sharing
personal information with strangers.
Youth need to be taught of the dangers of putting their personal information
online.
Information that is posted online can never be permanently erased.
Parents and their children should establish privacy settings, and the children
should learn to check to be sure that their privacy settings have not changed.
