What It Takes To Be An Entrepreneur | Richard Tan Success Resources
1. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR
When people think of entrepreneurs, they think about the success, the money, the
glamour associated with the word. Rarely do people look to what got them to that point.
Who wants to hear about the sleepless nights before a product launch, the stressful
deadlines, the floors they had to clean when they had to do everything themselves?
The truth is every entrepreneur started somewhere and the point they started from was
their failures – when they hit rock bottom, and there was no where to go but up. The
mark of a good entrepreneur (or athlete or entertainer) is learning from mistakes,
somehow turning them into opportunities, overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds,
and coming back stronger to win. It’s part art, part experimentation, part madness born
out of passion.
Failing to Ask the Right People
The best entrepreneurs are listening and learning all the time. The difference between
what makes or breaks one is HOW they listen; what they choose to hear. How
entrepreneurs process, apply what they learn to their business, is the difference
between success and another (now familiar path towards) failure.
A common mistake is getting started without actually asking people around you what
they think. The problem is, we tend to ask the wrong people like friends and family, but

2. people in the industry or other entrepreneurs who have battle wound scars are really the
best sources of information and learning.
Failing to Look Forward
Sometimes we have a tendency to launch a new venture based on our previous limited
experience. As (rightfully) proud and visionary individuals, we hate to be wrong so our
ventures are vain attempts to prove our ideas and ways of doing things are right. There
are times when some ideas we have need to die and stay buried so we can move on to
the next big idea without our past failures and conceit holding us back.
Yes, the drive to prove our way is the best way can be a positive source of motivation
but it can also send us down the wrong path.
Failing to Learn from Experience

3. The only failure in life is the failure to learn from our mistakes. When we fail, we have a
choice to make it a learning experience or a shock to our confidence. Winners come
back from defeats and overcome setbacks. If you can’t do that, then maybe
entrepreneurship isn’t for you, at least not now.
The instant you realize you’ve made a mistake, learn from it but find ways to turn it to
your advantage. If mistakes demoralize you to the point of depression or giving up, stop
now: entrepreneurship isn’t for you.
But if you have the tenacity to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep moving
forward (especially when the whole world is watching you), you may have what it takes
to be a truly successful one!

– Michael Jordan.
