What is a compound sentence?
A compound sentence is a sentence that has two complete ideas.
Two complete ideas are known as clauses that are usually connected by the
words like AND, BUT or SO.
For example: I tried to speak Arabic. My friend tried to speak Spanish.
Connect the sentence with AND: I tried to speak Arabic, and my friend tried to
speak Spanish.
For example: John knows how to play football. Abdullah knows how to play
tennis.
Connect the sentence with BUT: John knows how to play football, but Abdullah
knows how to play tennis.
For example: Ferrari is a sports cars. It is very fast car.
Connect the sentence using SO: Ferrari is a sports car, so it is a very fast car.











One of the common words used to connect two sentences (two ideas) is the
word But.
But shows a contrast, meaning it shows a difference between two ideas.
For example: I have a red car. My friend Ali has a blue car.
You can use but to connect both sentences and show a difference in two ideas.
You can say:
 I have a red car, but Ali has a blue car
Whenever you have two different ideas, and you are connecting those ideas
with a comma.
For example: Hani has a broken car. Akram has a new car.
 Hani has a broken car, but Akram has a new car.







More examples:
Ali has a Play Station 3. Tim has an X-box.
 Ali has a Play Station 3, but Tim has an X-box
I bought an iPhone. He bought an i-Pad.
 I bought an i-Phone, but he bought an i-Pad.
I visited few countries. John visited many counties.
 I visited few countries, but John visited many counties.

Sometimes but is not a connector. It does not connect two sentences.
But is used sometimes in a sentence because it has different meaning.
But means except.
For example: I have a Play Station 3 but controllers.
 MEANS

Except = not including

• Example 1: I have all chocolates in the box but Kit Kat.
• You are saying that you carry all chocolate brands except Kit Kat.
• Example 2: I have cats but dog. This means you have cats as your pets except
dogs.
• Example 3: My friend eats camel meat but chicken.
