(Kaplan;2003). </li></ul><ul><li>What is mental retardation? </li></ul><ul><li>“ mental retardation refers to significantly sub verge general intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period” (Grossman; 1973) </li></ul>
  2. 3. Down’s Syndrome <ul><li>What is Down’s Syndrome? </li></ul><ul><li>Down syndrome is a chromosomal deficiency. </li></ul><ul><li>Discovered by John Langdon Down in 1866. </li></ul>It consists of three types– trisomy21, translocation, and mosaicism with trisomy21 being the most common.
  3. 4. Down’s Syndrome <ul><li>Some Shocking Facts… </li></ul><ul><li>1 out of every 733 live births results in a child with DS. This means at any given point of time there are at least 2046 children with DS who need families. </li></ul><ul><li>Some do not survive of medical complications, some because of lack of medical attention, food and LOVE . </li></ul><ul><li>In Central and Western European countries more than 1.5 million children have been abandoned and living in “Public Care” !! </li></ul><ul><li>In Russia at least 7,00,000 children waiting for family, that means 955 </li></ul><ul><li>children with DS wait, languishing. </li></ul><ul><li>In Asia there are 35,72,000 orphans, with 5000 children with DS </li></ul><ul><li>are unwanted. </li></ul><ul><li>In India most of the children born with DS are killed at birth, most lucky </li></ul><ul><li>ones end up in orphanages or foster care situations. </li></ul>

Down’s Syndrome <ul><li>Where Can We Contribute ? </li></ul><ul><li>Reach out General Public </li></ul><ul><li>Provide ‘New Parent’ packets to new parents of DS afflicted babies through hospitals, obstetricians, pediatrician and public health nurses. </li></ul><ul><li>Scheduling DS displays in public places. </li></ul><ul><li>Reach editors of monthly parenting newspapers and magazines. </li></ul><ul><li>Help can be sought from local newspapers, TV and Radio </li></ul><ul><li>programmers – stories , write ups ,reports etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Providing a one page list of people with DS of all ages, school issues, </li></ul><ul><li>Supported employment opportunities, parent outreach program </li></ul><ul><li>Bring them to limelight, their interest to bring out the best </li></ul>
