If I Had a Car
Dear Mom and Dad,
1 I understand that you are worried about allowing me to have a car of my
own. I want you to know that I have thought a lot about the huge
responsibility this means. I realize that driving is a privilege that I can lose
at any time.
2 First of all, I promise to do well in my driver’s education class and
become the best driver you have ever seen. I will also help pay for the
insurance, gas, and other expenses that come up. I will always be home by
curfew so you don’t have to worry about me staying out later than I’m
allowed. AND you will never have to ask me to clean the car. I will always
keep it spotless—inside and out.
3 There are also great benefits to letting me drive. I could take my
brothers and sisters to school so that you wouldn’t have to be rushing to
work all the time. You wouldn’t have to worry about picking me up from
basketball practice, either. If we were to run out of milk or if Mom needs
something for dinner, I would be able to go to the grocery store. Also, Dad
could teach me how to change the oil and do the maintenance on the car,
which would be great father and son quality time.

Dear Professor Science,
(1) I like reading your column each month. You always seem to have the right answers to everyone’s
questions. This time I have one for you. I hope you know this answer.
(3) My big brother always laughs at me but I think I sound great whenever I sing in the shower. For some
reason, I do not sound nearly as good whenever I am in my room or any other room of the house.
Why is that? Is there something about the shower that is different or is it just my imagination like
my brother keeps telling me?
Nadia Arroyo
Guayama, Puerto Rico
Dear Nadia,
(10) Thanks for the compliment! I am glad you asked this question.
(11) You will be happy to know that this time you are the winner because you really do
sound better when you are scrubbing and getting clean. Part of the reason is that
your voice is bouncing off the hard, smooth walls of the shower and this
makes you sound much louder. The low notes are the most powerful.
Sometimes you can hear them vibrating while you are in there. Since
the sounds are bouncing all over the place, some of them take longer to
reach your ear. This makes them stretch out so they sound fuller and
stronger. When you put it all together, you sound quite fantastic. So
keep singing and don’t worry about your brother. Maybe he’s
just jealous of your voice!

Weather Station
1 Knowing what the weather will be like is helpful when planning a trip or deciding what to
wear. But knowing when bad weather is going to strike is even more helpful, especially when
you live on an island that is vulnerable to hurricanes. Having advance notice of hurricanes
allows people to prepare for their arrival so they can be safe until the hurricane passes. This very
important job of predicting the weather is done by people called meteorologists. But did you
know that you can assist meteorologists with their forecasts?
2 Making predictions about the weather takes input from many people. Having a weather
station in your backyard can be helpful so that the people in your community can be prepared
for the weather.
3 A weather station is a collection of instruments and equipment used to make observations
of the atmospheric conditions. People with weather stations in their backyards are called weather
watchers. They can use their weather stations to record and provide important information that
the meteorologists rely on.
4 A typical weather station is made up of the following:
A TYPICAL WEATHER STATION
INSTRUMENT
Thermometer
Barometer
WHAT IT READS
Temperature
Barometric pressure
Hygrometer
Anemometer
Humidity
Wind speed and direction
Rain gauge Precipitation
5 All of the instruments, except the anemometer and the rain gauge, are placed inside a
vented box. These are set outside the box. It’s also important to keep direct sunlight off the
thermometer and hygrometer.
6 Historically, postmasters used to take the readings, but they were not paid for this extra
duty. They would record the readings between 7 a.m.–9 a.m. Although postmasters are no longer
expected to do this work, volunteers still take readings between 7 a.m.–9 a.m.

7 With today’s technology, weather data can be sent automatically from a weather watcher to
meteorologists in certain areas. Sensors record the readings, and then the information is sent by
computer. Meteorologists use weather watchers’ reports to assist in their weather forecasting.
8 Thanks to weather watchers and meteorologists, we can enjoy our beautiful sunny days and
be prepared when hurricanes come around.
●29 In paragraph 3, equipment means —
A tools.
B projects.
C backyards.
D hurricane trackers.
●30 In paragraph 6, the word duty means —
A weather.
B instrument.
C assistance.
D responsibility.

●31 Volunteer weather watchers typically take
their readings —
A every morning.
B during hurricane season.
C on sunny days.
D during bad weather.
●32 The main idea of this passage is —
A that meteorologists are good at guessing
weather patterns.
B that backyard weather stations are helpful
in weather forecasting.
C why weather watchers want to be
meteorologists.
D postmasters have many responsibilities,
including delivering weather data.
●33 Which of the following is a FACT?
A Backyard weather stations are fun and a
great help.
B Meteorologists are grateful to weather
watchers.
C Hurricanes are the scariest storms a person
can experience.
D Meteorologists use weather watchers’
reports to assist in weather forecasting.

Getting to Know the Hercules Beetle
1 Hercules beetles, also known as rhinoceros and unicorn beetles, are the strongest animals in
the world. Some can lift as much as 850 times their own weight. On the other hand, a huge African
elephant can only carry up to 25% of its own weight on its back. An elephant would have to carry
850 elephants on its back to equal the strength of the Hercules beetle!
Physical Features
2 It is easy to tell the male and female Hercules beetles apart. Adult males have an upper horn
that protrudes forward from the thorax and a lower horn that sticks out from the head. Females do
not have horns at all.
3 Males and females also may have different coloration. Males are gray to olive green.
Females are usually darker and have more brown in their coloring.
4 Both males and females have spot patterns on their wing covers. They are similar to human
fingerprints because no two beetles will have the same markings.
Life Cycle
5 The life cycle of a Hercules beetle is about a year and a half. They live underground as
larvae for 10 to 16 months but only live for three to four months as adults.
6 If you come across one, remember that Hercules beetles are harmless and cannot hurt you
even if they are strong and have a somewhat fierce appearance.

C Hercules beetles are also known as
unicorn beetles.
D The life cycle of Hercules beetles is about
a year and a half.
●39 Why does the author compare the spots
on the Hercules beetle’s wings to human
fingerprints?

A Day to Remember
1 The García family had won a trip to Walt Disney World™ in a radio contest. As they
approached the park, Alex’s parents reminded him and his sister how important it was to stay
together. “If we get separated, go to the Cinderella Castle,” said his father. “That will be our
meeting place. Make sure you don’t lose your map!”
2 As the García family walked into the main park, the Magic Kingdom, Alex’s eyes grew
wider and wider. It was much better than he had ever imagined! It was fabulous but very
crowded. There were hundreds of people walking all around. But Alex wasn’t going to allow
this multitude of people to ruin his vacation!
3 As Alex made his way through the crowd, he was able to spot Mickey Mouse signing
autographs. “Look! I see Mickey!” Alex cried. When he turned around to ask his parents if he
could get an autograph, he realized they were not behind him. He looked all around, but could
not find his family. “I’m lost!” he thought.
4 Alex took a deep breath and tried not to panic. He remembered what his parents had said.
He dug through his backpack and pulled out his map. He studied it for a minute and found the
entrance, where he was. Then he found the Cinderella Castle and followed the path with his
finger. Luckily for him, it was straight ahead! He put his map back in his backpack and couldn’t
help chuckling as he looked up. The castle was right in front of him! He laughed some more and
started on his way.
5 When Alex reached the castle, he heard his name. He turned and saw his family running
toward him. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to get lost!” Alex explained. “I’m glad you remembered our
meeting spot,” said his father. “Now, let’s have some fun!”

There are five selections and some questions about each one. For each question, mark the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet. If I Had a Car Dear Mom and Dad, 1 I understand that you are worried about allowing me to have a car of my own. I want you to know that I have thought a lot about the huge responsibility this means. I realize that driving is a privilege that I can lose at any time. 2 First of all, I promise to do well in my driver’s education class and become the best driver you have ever seen. I will also help pay for the insurance, gas, and other expenses that come up. I will always be home by curfew so you don’t have to worry about me staying out later than I’m allowed. AND you will never have to ask me to clean the car. I will always keep it spotless—inside and out. 3 There are also great benefits to letting me drive. I could take my brothers and sisters to school so that you wouldn’t have to be rushing to work all the time. You wouldn’t have to worry about picking me up from basketball practice, either. If we were to run out of milk or if Mom needs something for dinner, I would be able to go to the grocery store. Also, Dad could teach me how to change the oil and do the maintenance on the car, which would be great father and son quality time.

This time I have one for you. I hope you know this answer. (3) My big brother always laughs at me but I think I sound great whenever I sing in the shower. For some reason, I do not sound nearly as good whenever I am in my room or any other room of the house. Why is that? Is there something about the shower that is different or is it just my imagination like my brother keeps telling me? Nadia Arroyo Guayama, Puerto Rico Dear Nadia, (10) Thanks for the compliment! I am glad you asked this question. (11) You will be happy to know that this time you are the winner because you really do sound better when you are scrubbing and getting clean. Part of the reason is that your voice is bouncing off the hard, smooth walls of the shower and this makes you sound much louder. The low notes are the most powerful. Sometimes you can hear them vibrating while you are in there. Since the sounds are bouncing all over the place, some of them take longer to reach your ear. This makes them stretch out so they sound fuller and stronger. When you put it all together, you sound quite fantastic. So keep singing and don’t worry about your brother. Maybe he’s just jealous of your voice! Professor Science Super Science Magazine

But knowing when bad weather is going to strike is even more helpful, especially when you live on an island that is vulnerable to hurricanes. Having advance notice of hurricanes allows people to prepare for their arrival so they can be safe until the hurricane passes. This very important job of predicting the weather is done by people called meteorologists. But did you know that you can assist meteorologists with their forecasts? 2 Making predictions about the weather takes input from many people. Having a weather station in your backyard can be helpful so that the people in your community can be prepared for the weather. 3 A weather station is a collection of instruments and equipment used to make observations of the atmospheric conditions. People with weather stations in their backyards are called weather watchers. They can use their weather stations to record and provide important information that the meteorologists rely on. 4 A typical weather station is made up of the following: A TYPICAL WEATHER STATION INSTRUMENT Thermometer Barometer WHAT IT READS Temperature Barometric pressure Hygrometer Anemometer Humidity Wind speed and direction Rain gauge Precipitation 5 All of the instruments, except the anemometer and the rain gauge, are placed inside a vented box. These are set outside the box. It’s also important to keep direct sunlight off the thermometer and hygrometer. 6 Historically, postmasters used to take the readings, but they were not paid for this extra duty. They would record the readings between 7 a.m.–9 a.m. Although postmasters are no longer expected to do this work, volunteers still take readings between 7 a.m.–9 a.m.

Some can lift as much as 850 times their own weight. On the other hand, a huge African elephant can only carry up to 25% of its own weight on its back. An elephant would have to carry 850 elephants on its back to equal the strength of the Hercules beetle! Physical Features 2 It is easy to tell the male and female Hercules beetles apart. Adult males have an upper horn that protrudes forward from the thorax and a lower horn that sticks out from the head. Females do not have horns at all. 3 Males and females also may have different coloration. Males are gray to olive green. Females are usually darker and have more brown in their coloring. 4 Both males and females have spot patterns on their wing covers. They are similar to human fingerprints because no two beetles will have the same markings. Life Cycle 5 The life cycle of a Hercules beetle is about a year and a half. They live underground as larvae for 10 to 16 months but only live for three to four months as adults. 6 If you come across one, remember that Hercules beetles are harmless and cannot hurt you even if they are strong and have a somewhat fierce appearance.

As they approached the park, Alex’s parents reminded him and his sister how important it was to stay together. “If we get separated, go to the Cinderella Castle,” said his father. “That will be our meeting place. Make sure you don’t lose your map!” 2 As the García family walked into the main park, the Magic Kingdom, Alex’s eyes grew wider and wider. It was much better than he had ever imagined! It was fabulous but very crowded. There were hundreds of people walking all around. But Alex wasn’t going to allow this multitude of people to ruin his vacation! 3 As Alex made his way through the crowd, he was able to spot Mickey Mouse signing autographs. “Look! I see Mickey!” Alex cried. When he turned around to ask his parents if he could get an autograph, he realized they were not behind him. He looked all around, but could not find his family. “I’m lost!” he thought. 4 Alex took a deep breath and tried not to panic. He remembered what his parents had said. He dug through his backpack and pulled out his map. He studied it for a minute and found the entrance, where he was. Then he found the Cinderella Castle and followed the path with his finger. Luckily for him, it was straight ahead! He put his map back in his backpack and couldn’t help chuckling as he looked up. The castle was right in front of him! He laughed some more and started on his way. 5 When Alex reached the castle, he heard his name. He turned and saw his family running toward him. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to get lost!” Alex explained. “I’m glad you remembered our meeting spot,” said his father. “Now, let’s have some fun!”
