                                     Promotional Strategies

The goal of public relation efforts: To increase sales, reinforce a good reputation, and
increase willingness of consumers to respond to advertising efforts for the company’s
products.

Public Relations audiences: Customers, employees, and the community. Each audience is
addressed in a variety of ways to generate positive goodwill for a business. Some of the
efforts include:

        Customer Relations Activities: On-site child-care facilities; free services such as
        delivery, gift wrap, gift registries; customer advisory boards; personal shoppers and
        consultants; consumer affair specialists.

        Employee Relations Activities: Employee recognition programs; college tuition
        reimbursement; health/fitness programs; informational programs.

        Community Relations Activities: Participating and sponsoring civic, social, and
        charitable events.

Assignment: Using newspapers or the World Wide Web^, locate a total of 5 news releases
demonstrating public relations activities or publicity in general regarding a business. 3 articles
should demonstrate positive relations and 2 articles should demonstrate negative relations.
   1. Cut articles out of newspaper.
   2. Glue/staple article 1 at the top of the sheet of paper, leaving room to write at the
       bottom.
   3. Briefly describe the nature of the publicity and identify the target audience for the
       event or activity (customers, employees, or the community).
   4. Give a brief statement regarding what makes this news/activity/event publicity for the
       business.
   5. Continue with articles 2, 3, 4, and 5 following the instructions in steps 2-4.
   6. When complete, stack the 5 sheets of paper, attached to the upper-left corner a grading
       rubric for this assignment.
   7. Your completed assignment should be turned in at the designated, in-class location.

5 sheets of paper (8 ½ x 11)              Newspapers (optional)
Glue or staples                                   Scissors

Internet Access                           Printer
