Digital technology was essential for all aspects of evaluating the group's opening sequence project. They used Blogger to host evaluations in various formats like text, images, presentations, and videos, allowing easy access and feedback. Photoshop enabled visual analysis of footage. PowerPoint and filmed presentations helped structure evaluations. The public nature of Blogger provided valuable unbiased feedback to improve their work.

of information sources and
different websites, you can get
good information within seconds,
free, fast and easy
Disadvantages: may not have
information specific to what you
need, information changes so you
may not be able to find
information you have previously
used. There are so many websites,
hard to find the right one
5. Wikipedia â availability of information

streaming, quick and easy.
Disadvantages: not always useful or correct. Comments may not be useful and can be
harsh
8. Dangers of Search Engines
⢠The information can be quite
similar on many different
websites which can make
finding different, varied
information quite difficult.
⢠Sometimes, you need specific
information however the
information available is not
quite refined enough for you.
A lot of people donât go further than the first page so many students
could get the same information.
If you want pictures of specific things, it is often hard and irrelevant
pictures come up.
9. BFI Statistical Yearbook
Valuable source of facts
and figures available to
all online.
Covers many areas and is
a reliable source of
information.
Allowed us to make
informed choices backed
up by facts and figures
10. SUMMARY - RESEARCH
Digital technology is vital in our research.
Without it we could not have looked at film
openings, stills from films, lighting etc. We
would have had to watch films by DVD or in the
cinema â expensive and time-consuming ways
of carrying out research.
12. Cameras
⢠For our planning of where we would film, we took
photographs with a Nikon digital camera
⢠For practising our final sequence we used a Canon video
camera
13. Blogger
⢠To show our research
and planning for our
opening sequence, we
published it on to
Blogger which is a free
weblog which is linked
with Google it enables
you to upload text,
pictures and videos.
14. Blogger- Video
⢠We were filmed presenting the
first draft of our film outline, we
uploaded this to blogger and
watched back to see what we
could add and change.
⢠We finalised our storyboard and
and then added it to the blog so
that we could keep looking back
on this as we filmed and also
when we began editing.
15. Blogger - Photographs
⢠We were able to upload
images and this was good as
visual evidence was some of
the most useful for our
planning.
⢠The negative about
uploading images was the
fact you werenât able to copy
and paste them, you had to
save them to the desktop
and then download them
onto blogger which was time
consuming.
16. Blogger - Layout
⢠It enables you to see
each otherâs work which
helped us share our info
and Ideas if someone
was stuck.
17. Name Filters
⢠Also had label filters of our names which
helped us find our work easily as we have the
same titles as each other.
18. Ordering of Work
⢠All the work is laid out in
chronological order, so it
is easy to find your work
which may have been
posted recently or in the
past.
19. SUMMARY - PLANNING
⢠We needed digital cameras for all aspects of our planning
as these were the tools we would use in the actual
construction.
⢠Blogger was a vital digital hosting site as it enabled us to
keep all our research and planning activities in a shared
space which we could interact with as a group. This
significantly eased the difficulties of working together
after the loss of a group member as their work was still
on record and could be accessed.
21. Final Cut Express
Final Cut Express allowed us to edit our footage. It is a digital
editing package that enabled us to achieve professional
editing for our opening sequence.
22. Final Cut Express
We were able to control many
aspects of how the video
appeared on screen e.g.
opacity and saturation
These were the filters we used
to create the idea of a
flashback and this had to be
adjusted separately in every
clip.
This shows the layering capacity of
Final Cut as we built up our
sequence in many layers
combining video, credits, diegetic
sound from filming, non-diegetic
music and enhanced sound.
This is where
our footage,
music, ident
and credits
appeared. It
meant we
could drag it
onto our
timeline and
edit it into our
opening
sequence.
23. Sound
⢠When finding a soundtrack we used
the site free play music which gave
us access to a huge range of royalty
free tracks.
⢠We entered key words such as âfast
pacedâ or âactionâ to narrow down
our search and eventually after
listening to various tracks we
selected âsuperspyâ.
⢠We had to edit the volume levels on
the final piece as come sound was
drowned out by the music we had
added. This was just a simple click
and drag process.
24. Manipulation of Sound
⢠We also had to enhance sound on our final piece. We filmed outside
where it is difficult to control ambient sound and had to lower the
volume in many places and replace with audio from another clip
because we were disturbed by a car, passing train or dog walker.
⢠Some parts we filmed had not captured the voice as it was too quiet
even when enhanced. These parts needed to be re-recorded after
the original two days of filming.
25. Effects and Transitions
Transitions
⢠Fade in / fade out was used extensively throughout
the sequence to mark the different sections and to
let the audience know they were moving from
Laurenâs POV to the POV of Harry and Ellie. It made
the overall cross-cutting structure clear and helped
break up the action into manageable segments so
the audience could recognise the locations and
parallels in the actions. We preferred to adjust this
manually as shown on the black opacity line as it
meant we could fade at exactly the moments we
wished instead of this being spread evenly across
the two clips.
26. The basis of editing on Final Cut is being able to move footage
around even after you have edited it. Nothing is permanent and
further changes can always be made. Here you can see one
offset clip which we have moved from earlier in the sequence as
we are experimenting with the way to close the scene.
Creating the Sequence
27. Live Type
Live Type was the software that we
used to create our credits. It comes
as part of the Final Cut package and
offers a wide variety of fonts and
effects that can then be imported
back into Final Cut projects.
28. Live Type
We made our credits on LiveType by choosing a font, style, colour
and layout which we then overwrote with all our other credits to
make sure they were consistent. We were then able to place them at
the right points of the edited sequence so they appeared over the
clips we had chosen. Every movement of the LiveType file required
us to render to watch back properly, so this was a time-consuming
task.
29. Ident
This was made through a combination of screen capture software to
record a gif, LiveType to produce a logo and Final Cut Express to
adjust the animation, add a different colour and edit all the elements
together with some accompanying music which sounds like a
memorable jingle. This was a good task to learn how to combine all
kinds of different packages to make a product and luckily they were all
compatible with each other.
30. SUMMARY - CONSTRUCTION
⢠Digital software editing packages enabled us
to create work that looked professional.
⢠We were able to use these packages quite
quickly with a little tuition.
⢠Without these packages, we would not have
been able to create our coursework at all.
⢠We were also able to combine work from
these packages to create effects.
31. USE OF TECHNOLOGY FOR
EVALUATION
Many of the comments
made about the use of
Blogger for research and
planning also apply here
and wonât be repeated.
32. Evaluating Work
⢠Throughout the coursework we have evaluated our own
work to show how we have improved and what has
changed. This research has helped us to adapt our final
piece effectively to make it flow smoothly and look good.
33. Accessibility
⢠Because the blog is open to the
public we are open to criticism and
praise from anyone. This is helpful
as we get a non biased opinion on
our work and can see what people
really think about what weâve
produced. This is important as the
feedback we get from our teacher
may not be enough help as they
have seen our course work step by
step, so know what itâs about.
Someone who has not seen the
work before can then write if itâs
clear what genre it is in and if they
are intrigued by what is happening.
34. Audience Feedback
Using the comments
function allowed us to get
extremely useful feedback
from another school.
This was a good example
of the reach of the blog
and its ability to help
communicate ideas and
plans across a distance,
keeping us connected to
the wider media world.
35. Photoshop
⢠This allowed us to create our
mind maps / posters on target
audience
⢠It allowed us to separate our
points so we could explain more
clearly as well as allowing us to
combine text and images
together in a more attractive
way. It made a more creative
way of presenting what is quite
dry statistical information.
36. Image Combination on Photoshop
⢠We combined stills from our
opening sequence in order to
evaluate how we used
camera angles and mise-en-
scène in order to apply to our
chosen genre.
⢠We could then talk about the
conventions we used on
Blogger as part of our
evaluation with a quick visual
point of reference and also
offer an overview of the
âlookâ of the coursework in a
single image.
37. PowerPoint
⢠We used PowerPoint for
our evaluation of digital
technology that we used
during the making of our
opening sequence. This was
useful as we could use
small points and present
our techniques in a
different way.
⢠The value of PowerPoint is
that it makes you condense
your ideas and think of how
to express them concisely
with a useful visual aid.
38. Formatting on Blogger
⢠Blogger allows us to upload pictures
like screenshots of coursework to
the blog along with text and other
formats. This is helpful as we can
visually illustrate changes/
improvements to our work. It also
acts as evidence that we have
researched and evaluated our own
work. It is much easier to present
this kind of work electronically than
via many sheets of paper.
39. Filmed Presentations
⢠Because Blogger has the capacity to
host video we were able to present some
of our evaluations in the form of filmed
presentations which we could then
upload to the blog.
⢠Some of these presentations were filmed
as a group and that was useful as we
were able to include an element of
debate and show different sides of an
argument easily.
⢠We also filmed alone and were able to
present our views to the camera
uninterrupted with a few guide questions
to help us along. This was also useful as
we were able to think through many of
the issues raised in this PowerPoint
before starting it and had the chance to
collect our thoughts first.
40. Overall Advantages of Blogger
⢠We can see the progress we have made as a group.
⢠We can upload content from any computer meaning
work can be done from virtually anywhere.
⢠Comments from the general public can be written on
our posts which is useful when we evaluate our work.
⢠Comments are unbiased so we know they are going to
be helpful.
⢠We can post in a variety of formats such as pictures,
text, PowerPoint and video.
41. SUMMARY - EVALUATION
⢠We used different kinds of digital technology
to present our evaluations.
⢠These helped us work effectively as a group
and created our evaluations as media
products in their own right.
⢠Blogger is a vital tool for making our
evaluations accessible to all.
