38. “Ask your favorite designer what they think
of this site.
If they like it, you know they have their head
up their ass.
If they hate it, the odds are good that they
understand websites are about providing
information and solving needs.”
– Vincent Flanders

Hi. My name is Brooke Brooks and today I’m going to talk about blowing up web pages and putting them back together.
So – I know some of you guys work in shops where you get to build from scratch. You get to take white board and brainstorm and give birth to great new ideas with elegant and intuitive design.
Yeah - Not me.
I’ve spent the last decade working for major ecommerce... websites that existed long before I came around. Although I might occasionally get to do something from scratch, the bulk of what I’ve done was editing, adding, deleting, rearranging, reordering or rebuilding something that already exists.
Do you guys know the Winchester House in California? The widowed heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune built a house in California. And she kept building. And building. And building. And adding and adding.
The house is nuts. It has stairs that go nowhere… doors that open into air… nothing makes sense. It looks exactly like a 120 room house… that was built with no master blueprint.
My question to you… Have you ever seen a web page that looked like the Winchester House?
Ok – so let’s talk about when to blow something up.
Every time I get a request to “add a button” or lump in a new component, or change something on a page, I try to take a step back, look at the page and ask if it’s time to it blow up.
Another thing I look at when I evaluate for blow up potential: are we meeting the primary objective of the page? But wait – let’s back up.
What IS the primary objective of the page? What are secondary objectives? If the page has lost it’s focus, or your unsure what the primary focus is, the first thing is to identify and RECORD that directive. I say “record” for a reason… it’s kind of like writing out a mission statement for the page. When you start to get lost in the weeds, or get into a heated discussion with someone, you can always refer back to what the primary goal is.

But these were just too easy…
(They’re not one of our sponsors – right?)
The first thing that my eye hits is the Human Resources module. Now I’m wondering if this site is meant for xerox employees?
Then I see these other modules…
And now I’m really wondering… because what I didn’t know when I first hit this site – is that these are PRODUCTS that Xerox provides. Did you know that? I didn’t.
Here it is… Now – I mainly know Vincent Flanders from his “worst” lists… but he had a pretty funny quote about this page. He said…
So what I’m going to share with you today… I’m not saying it’s the only way or that any other way is wrong… it’s just the process that I use.
And you know what? – and this is part of what I love about this profession... This is a room full of by great, creative minds. If you find a way to improve my process – or to add your own flavor in – go for it. There’s always room for improvement, right?
