1. Why does Africa have so few
billionaires?
Aims:
• To understand the challenges facing
countries in generating wealth
• To know the factors that might be
responsible for the lack of wealth in Africa

2. Challenges faced by
societies when developing
Task: Look at the following photos –
in pairs, explain how they might limit
the number of billionaires in certain
parts of the world.

8. Did you know…?
• All these pictures were taken in the USA – the
richest country in the world with over 400
billionaires!
• Yet Africa only has 5!
• So why are environmental obstacles not the only
reason why there is a gap in wealth around the
world?
• Although environmental obstacles can affect
development, it is often political and historical
factors that have the largest effect.

9. What factors might limit wealth
production in Africa?
Task: In small groups, you are going to create a 2-3 minute
short PowerPoint explaining your factor, the countries it
affects and how it can limit wealth production.
• Disease i.e. malaria and HIV/AIDS
• Droughts
• Flood
• Cyclones
• Landslides
• War
• Political corruption
• Landlocked

• Design a newspaper article answering:
• ‘Why are there more billionaires in some
parts of the world than others?
