Q&A
4. My take on it…
Don’t ask yourself what the world needs….
Ask yourself what will make you
come alive….
Because what the world needs are
more people who have come alive….
a lot
5. In 2009, your Division shuts down...
• The Good news: There appear to be jobs out
there, if you know where to look
• In 2009 you have a VAST ARRAY of
free communication tools at your
disposal, and you can use them to find a new
job
6. The current landscape
• Common posting on corporate websites: quot;No recruiters or
offshore teams please, we've already got our hands
full, thanks.quot;
• Relying solely on Recruiters is quot;badquot;
o Employer's market
Very costly, at 15% to 25% of base salary
o
Even fix-fee ($15k) difficult to part with
o
• Public posting of resume is quot;badquot;, in my opinion:
Monster, The Ladders, etc. Why pay?
o
Too passive of an approach to the job hunt
o
But may be useful in a quot;cover all basesquot; approach
o
• Hiring managers are using Social and Web 2.0 to fill jobs
Personal recommendations are still the best method to get quot;inquot;
o
7. Craig’s List
• Not only for buying/selling cars and
junk, or quot;hooking upquot;
• Low-cost way for employer to post job
opening ($25 per post)
• New jobs posted daily! In all categories.
o Search, and RSS...
8. The Social Web
• LinkedIn
Stay connected professionally
o
• Facebook
Stay connected socially
o
No longer college kids, most quot;kidsquot; have moved on
o
• Don't have an account, get one!
Remember your parents having trouble programming the VCR?
o
Don't get quot;stuckquot;, don't be quot;afraidquot; of new technology
o
9. LinkedIn
• LinkedIn, stay connected professionally
Job openings are posted
o
in-mail is a two-way street, hiring, getting hired
o
Your online resume: get recommendations, give recommendations
o
• MAJOR TIP: With a target company, search for company to
find people who work there
• MAJOR TIP: With a person's name, search for that person
Get help getting introduced
o
• MAJOR TIP: Google the person's name
10. Web 2.0 Risks
• Assume everything posted on
Facebook, LinkedIn, etc stay
forever
Forever is a loooong time... assume
o
quot;googlequot; will eventually find it
• Google yourself
Take control of your online image.
o
• Would you hire this guy to run your
Sales team? --->
Facebook photo of a sales executive
o
11. What is LinkedIn
• LinkedIn is an online network of more than 30 million
experienced professionals from around the world.
• “When you join, you create a profile that summarizes
your professional accomplishments. Your profile helps
you find and be found by former
colleagues, clients, and partners. You can add more
connections by inviting trusted contacts to join
LinkedIn and connect to you.”
• “Your network consists of your connections, your
connections’ connections, and the people they
know, linking you to thousands of qualified
professionals.”

13. LinkedIn
Three Parts of LinkedIn
1. LinkedIn profile
The profile section of LinkedIn is a great place to showcase what you’re all about. Make sure you
have a great photo and descriptive information about yourself and your organization. This is an ad for
connecting. Reach out to current friends and connections and get a few recommendations
as these appear in your profile.
2. LinkedIn groups
LinkedIn allows you to create groups and this can be a great way to pull
together like-minded folks with an aim toward networking more formally.
This can function a bit like a networking club might in the physical world.
3. LinkedIn Q & A
For my money, this is one of the real powers of LinkedIn. Posing questions to your network and
the at-large community is a powerful way to get some of your core messages across. You can also
use this feature to get feedback on specific issues or even potential blog posts.
16. Headline
• Be specific about your location and industry
• Use the “Headline” as a way to attract
visitors. Include what you do or what you are
looking for
ACTION ITEM
17. Real Time Updates
• This can be updated
as frequently as you
wish
• Say what you are
doing similar to
Facebook, Twitter
• This will show in
your connection’s
“Network Updates”
19. Add your online places
• Default is “My
Company” “My
Website” “My Blog”
• Edit to name your
company, name of
website, etc
• More click through’s
when sites are named
ACTION ITEM
20. Who are you and what do you do?
• Summary = 30 second
elevator pitch
• Who you are, what
you do, what you are
interested in
• Specialties can be
used as keywords and
acronyms specific to
your industry
ACTION ITEM
21. Online Resume
• This is your resume but
without the worry of 1
or 2 page minimums
• Be descriptive
• Include keywords and
acronyms (again)
where appropriate
ACTION ITEM
22. Education
• Be sure to list
schools, majors, a
ctivities in and
out of the
classroom
ACTION ITEM
23. What interests you?

• This humanizes you
• This gives others the ability to find common interests
with you

24. Your Groups and Associations
• Include personal and professional groups
25. Honors and Awards
• Include
personal, profession
al, and volunteer
nominations and
awards
ACTION ITEM
26. How to get in touch with you
• You may want to add a message
• You may want to add your email address
• Interested In = who you are looking to connect with
ACTION ITEM
27. Your Personal URL
• Personalize your URL
• Add this to your email footer
• When commenting on web sites, blogs, industry
leave this URL for people to find you.
• Include it when signing up for events
28. Use Google to search LinkedIn
• Your reach is only so big
• Google indexes most personal and company
profiles
• Start with this search string in Google
– Site:LinkedIn.com (enter keywords)
– You will need to “play” with
words, phrases, “”, like you would usually do on
any Google search
29. LinkedIn Tips
• Create a specific email address for your LinkedIn account
• Archive unwanted or unknown connection requests
• “5” I Don’t Knows can get you in trouble with LinkedIn
• “3,000” Invitations allowed (can request for more)
• Personalize invitations or create your own templates. LinkedIn
templates are boring.
• Write recommendations
• Participate in Questions & Answers
30. Ask yourself. . .
Look at your profile, would you want to
connect with you?
31. It’s not the size of your network but how you
use it
32. 3 Steps

• Build your Online Professional Network on
LinkedIn

LinkedIn

more people who have come alive….
a lot
