How are universities responding to two recent paradigm shifts impacting global education? First, there is a generational change between millennials and the new cohort known as K or Z. While our current traditional undergraduates may be more anxious, skeptical, and know only smartphones, they also crave connection and are makers, creators, and inventors. (âThink millennials have it tough? For 'Generation K', life is even harsher.â The Guardian, March 19, 2016) The second shift is the increased fluidity between global and local interactions and groups. As classrooms continue to diversify with international and first-generation students, the university community â students, faculty, and staff â must obtain and demonstrate intercultural agility, curiosity, and empathy to navigate the complexities of the contemporary world. This session addresses how the University of St. Thomas has implemented into its administrative structure an innovative partnership between faculty from diverse disciplines and education abroad professionals to address the new realities of global and local engagement that respond to the worldâs most pressing needs.

Knowledge, while crucial, is just one piece of the "global citizen" puzzle so many universities are trying to solve. Intercultural effectiveness â the hallmark of global citizenship â requires affective and behavioral learning as well as cognitive. Integrating effective fostering of global citizens into the university mainstream requires significant involvement by faculty. During this session, we'll provide ideas for how faculty might become more deeply and effectively engaged in promoting intercultural learning at universities, even contributing to promotion and tenure documents regarding the âmentoringâ of undergraduate students. We'll also share some early success stories.

For the past two years, CIEE and Union College have collaborated to run International Faculty Development Seminars in Beijing, China, and Istanbul, Turkey, assisting Union in their efforts to internationalize their common curriculum. During this session, we'll outline how Union applied for and won a grant from the Mellon Foundation, approached CIEE for assistance with the design and execution of the programs, and ultimately, how the first of the two programs has changed and will continue to change the common curriculum at Union. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how international professional development opportunities can help internationalize curriculum on their own campuses.

Like the intrepid students who study somewhere other than their home countries, faculty should challenge themselves to step outside of their comfort zones. During this session, you'll learn how to define your identity as a global teacher and how to experiment with pedagogies that facilitate learning for a variety of students. Panelists will share highlights from a workshop they co-facilitated in the Czech Republic for teachers from across Europe who work with U.S. study abroad students. In addition, they'll lead participants in a discussion about experiences teaching abroad or instructing diverse learners on home campuses, as well as an interactive teaching exercise.

In recent years, an increasing number of students have been choosing to pursue their education abroad, embarking on transformative journeys that offer not only academic enrichment but also cultural experiences and personal growth. This growing trend has captured the attention of students, parents, educators, and policymakers alike, shaping the landscape of higher education and international relations. In this blog, we delve into the factors driving the rise in students going abroad and the far-reaching implications of this global phenomenon. 1. The Quest for Quality Education Beyond Borders: One of the primary motivations behind the surge in students going abroad is the pursuit of high-quality education. Renowned universities and institutions around the world attract students seeking specialized programs, cutting-edge research opportunities, and exposure to diverse academic approaches. As students recognize the advantages of accessing top-tier education, they are increasingly willing to venture beyond their home countries to unlock new learning horizons. 2. Cultural Immersion and Personal Development: Studying abroad offers more than just academic benefitsâitâs a chance for students to immerse themselves in different cultures, languages, and ways of life. The experience fosters personal growth, independence, and adaptability, as students navigate unfamiliar environments and interact with peers from diverse backgrounds. This exposure to cultural diversity equips students with valuable life skills and a global perspective, enhancing their readiness for a connected and multicultural world. 3. Enhancing Career Prospects and Global Networking: The international experience gained through studying abroad has become a significant asset in todayâs competitive job market. Employers value candidates who possess cross-cultural competence, adaptability, and a broader outlook. Students who have studied abroad often demonstrate these qualities, making them attractive candidates for multinational corporations and organizations with a global presence. Additionally, the friendships and professional connections formed during international studies can pave the way for future collaborations and opportunities. 4. Evolving Government Policies and Scholarships: Government policies and initiatives that promote international education have contributed to the rise in students going abroad. Many countries offer scholarships, grants, and financial incentives to attract international students, making education in foreign countries more accessible and affordable. These policies not only benefit students but also enhance cultural exchange and strengthen diplomatic ties between nations. 5. Technological Advancements Facilitating Mobility: Advancements in technology have made it easier for students to access information about foreign universities, courses, and application processes. Online platforms enable seamless communication with educational institutions, simplifyin

We know that most sequels suck. This is true with most movies, but it is especially true about sports movie sequels. As anyone who paid their hard-earned dollars to see Major League II, Slap Shot II: Breaking the Ice, or Caddyshack II knows, great art is hard to follow. I know what youâre thinking. Does the world really need another collection of writings about Sports and HR? Wasnât it beaten to death in the last edition? Yet, here we are with the 2011 season - 45 more posts ripped from the screens of the HR Capitalist, Fistful of Talent, Rehaul.com, the Tim Sackett Project, and True Faith HR. Its more points than Kobe or LeBron averaged, but fewer than the number of TDs Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, or Tom Brady threw. And, the 2012 season is already looking brightâŠbut, itâll have to wait until next year.
