How does you media product represent particular social groups? AS Media
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
2. Stereotype of someone who listens to rock/
alternative music
Over the different generations there have been many different
stereotypes of people who listen to rock music. However the most
common stereotypes now are
•Wears alot of black clothing
•Is commonly called an “emo”
• Has black hair
•Violence
•Disrespectful
•Angry/ full of bad emotions
For example- Singer of “emo” band My
Chemical Romance”.
3. Female is wearing mostly black
clothing and also has black hair which
relates back to my stereotype of
someone who listens to rock music.
Also the lighting which I had used
creates shadows on her face. Which
adds are sense of darkness into the
image.
The glow
around the
images
connotes the
importance of
those images
as they have
some
significant to
the magazine.
The Buzzwords such as
“Epic, Win, Exclusive”
attracts the audience. If a
fan of rock music sees if it
is an “Exclusive” issue there
is more chance of them
buying it.
The way that
Beth is standing
suggests a
relaxed
atmosphere and
that she is
happy to be
associated with
the genre of
music.
4. The band looks like
they are having fun
and relaxed. This
portrays how they
are being
associated with the
music genre.
Live music-
Often going to gigs
and seeing live
music is associated
to alternative music
rather than pop
music.
Using the same housestyle
throughout makes the
magazine seem organised
and professional
As my target
audience are
females I used the
majority of the
images on the
contents pages
which featured
females.
By using categories I
can navigate the
audience around
the magazine.
All of the people in the
images are dressed
similar to the
stereotype. For
example the amount of
black in the
clothing, “Reading and
Leeds”, Checked shirt
and brightly coloured
5. Beth is portrayed as tough and fearless.
As the Alternative music industry is
seen to be this way.
She is also dressed casually to
suggested she is comfortable in the
environment.
Looking directly
into the camera
makes it more
intimate with
the audience.
This especially
works because
she is in her
band and writes
her own music
which helps
them connect
to their fans.
Says the name of the music genre
the magazine is trying to promote
on her t-shirt.
Also the lettering is in red which
contrast with the off green colour
on the rest of the page.
“Exclusive” the exclusive interview
is packed in with information
which the fans would want to
read.
